How to build a sleeping box, just like Mark Zuckerberg

There is a small box on Priscilla Chan's bedside table. There is a soft glow from 6am to 7am in the morning and acts as a passive clock informing you that there is an hourly window of time.

After noticing that his wife was afraid to foresee that crucial hour – which is usually the reason when the children wake up – Mark Zuckerberg built the small lamp . Instead of looking all night for her phone to check the time, she just has to open an eye and see if the box is lit.

He shared the project on Instagram and said:

"… She'll wake up and check the time on her phone to see if the kids could wake up soon, but then to know that they're out of time Overwhelmed She can not fall asleep again, so I worked on building her what I call a "sleeping box." She sits on her bedside table and between 6 and 7 in the morning there is a very faint light ̵

1; visible enough that when she sees it, she will know that it is a good time for one of us to have the children, but that is powerless. The light will not wake her while she is still asleep. "

His post encouraged the entrepreneurs to take the idea and join in, but you do not have to wake up for the Kickstarter to start. Instead, you can create your own Zuckerberg-style sleeping box with a simple recipe.

How to build a sleeping box

The construction of this box to reduce anxiety is simple. All you need is:

  • A lamp with a translucent to opaque screen
  • A Smart Bulb or Smart Switch

To assemble your sleeping box, screw in a smart bulb (such as [) this Lifx lamp ) in the lamp. Then go to the settings and set the light to be switched on for the desired hours.

Using a Smart Bulb has the advantage of allowing you to set the color to a warm yellow hue and set it to a very low level to prevent the Sleepbox from waking you up.

For the smart switch option, you can select a lamp (or even a night light) that already has the desired color and dimming. Then connect it to a smart switch (like the Amazon Smart Plug ) and set the schedule in the attached app.

Here are some bulbs that could be used to set up a smart switch:

Alternatively, consider a wake-up light such as the Philips Somneo Light Therapy lamp. This option allows you to create a schedule, adjust the brightness, and adjust the color temperature in a device. For some people, however, the lamp's screen may be too large and disturb sleep even at the lowest setting.
