Instagram stories started as a successor to Snapchat's very similar feature, but are very popular among more than 400 million people The function daily. Stories provide a short-lived, more casual way to share content with friends and followers who are not permanently on your Instagram feed. Stories can be shared either for all of your followers or for some select people through the new close friends option. Since Instagram is owned by Facebook, you can share your Instagram story directly with your Facebook story to reach your friends on both platforms.
Pictures and videos posted in your story stay visible for up to 24 hours. After that they disappear forever ̵
For still images, the easiest way to capture a story is to take a screenshot. We have instructions for creating screenshots for iOS and Android. The key to Instagram Stories, however, is that you first hold your finger or thumb on the screen. This will stop the story and clear the UI elements so you get a clean capture. However, screenshots do not really work for video stories. If you want to save videos, you need a third-party app.
Go to the App Store and look for Repost Story for Instagram. The app is pretty straightforward and you'll need to sign in with your Instagram account and have access to your device's photo library to save stories. Once set up, you'll see stories of your followers at the top of a row, similar to the Instagram app itself. Tap the circular icon to preview the story. Tap this preview to open the image or video in full-screen mode. You will see a memory symbol in the upper right corner. Just tap to save the file to your device. If a story is made up of multiple videos or pictures, you'll need to save each one individually – you can not save the entire story as a movie file as in the Instagram app with your own file.
By default, Repost Story for Instagram is a free app that displays a nasty five-second ad every time you save a story. You can remove these ads for a $ 5 in-app purchase, but if you only occasionally need to save a story, the ads will not bother you too much.
The Android app we use is called Story Saver and is available for free from the Google Play Store. Like with Repost Story for iOS, you'll need to sign in to your Instagram account to get started. The main page displays all the stories posted by your followers. However, you can also search for other users in the search bar. Select the photo or video you want and tap Save . The photo appears in the StorySaver folder when you view your photos.
Regardless of how you save a story, you should ensure that you do so with the permission of the person who posted it. This is especially important if you want to share the content in your own story or in your feed. Of course, you can also share directly from Instagram stories if you do not want to save them first on your device. For instructions, see our complete guide to using Instagram stories.
