Microsoft launches its new Chromium-based edge browser today. It has built-in tracking protection, a new collection feature for retrieving images and content from the web, and an Internet Explorer mode for businesses. If you are currently a Chrome user, the general features and user interface are very well known.
Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and MacOS users can download and install the new version of Edge today. Microsoft will provide this to Windows 10 users in the coming weeks via Windows Update. Here's how to download it now.
- Visit the Microsoft Edge site and download the installer
- Start the new Edge. You will be greeted with a splash screen where you can choose to import or restart data from Chrome / Old Edge.
- You can also configure what new tabs look like and / or log in to a Microsoft account to enable synchronization of favorites, passwords, and more
- Finally, by clicking the "Next" button, you can personalize Disable Microsoft ads, searches, messages, etc.
Use the new Edge on your mobile device.
If you are interested in using Edge on your desktop and mobile devices, Microsoft makes it available for both Android and iOS. (If you download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and then sign in with the same Microsoft account that you use on Windows or MacOS, your favorites, passwords, and more will be synchronized.)
You can enable this Tracking protection under Settings. You can customize the Edge Mobile menu by tapping the three dots below, selecting the change menu, and then dragging and dropping the icons where you want them.
Full browsing history and open tab syncing between desktop and mobile aren't available, but Microsoft plans to add them in the coming months. Microsoft will also shortly add expansion syncing for all desktop versions of Edge and also enable syncing collections.
