For the first time since its introduction, the well-known System UI tuner must be unlocked in a new way. You can no longer press the gear icon (in the Quick Settings) until it turns and displays the hidden settings option. With Android 9.0 Pie there is a new workaround to uncover the menu.
If you do not know anything, System UI Tuner lets you choose which icons to display in the status bar. For most icons, you can simply turn them off or on, but there are some extra time and battery controls. It's a great tool to give you a little more customization and it cleans up unnecessary icons that overload your status bar.
: Create a Widget
First, you need to create a widget by using an activity launcher. There are dedicated activity startup apps, but we've found that most of them are not compatible with Android Pie at this time. It's best to use Nova Launcher, which includes an activity start feature.
If nova is open, long press on the home screen and select "Widgets". There is an area for widgets created by Nova Launcher. Inside is an option known as "Activities." Select this option, scroll down and tap on "System UI" and then select "System UI Demo Mode"
Next, tap the widget to launch the menu. You get two options: Status Bar and Do Not Disturb. The former will manage which icons are displayed in the status bar.
To disable a status bar, simply disable the corresponding switch. Battery and time are the only two options without a switch. Battery opens a pop-up menu with options on whether the battery percentage should only be displayed during charging or always. Time will open a pop-up menu where you can display not just hours and minutes, but seconds as well.
Under "Do not disturb," there is only one option: "Volume key combination." If this option is disabled, You can not enable hibernation by reducing the volume to zero and then lowering the volume again.
Although the System UI Tuner is not as robust as it used to be, System UI Tuner still offers great tools for customizing your Android experience. Although it has a new access method, it's still worth cleaning up the status bar and preventing accidental activation of Do Not Disturb mode.
