If you have a public Instagram profile, you have likely fallen victim to inappropriate comments from strangers. Given the size of the social network, it is practically impossible to escape from such bad actors. Fortunately, Instagram has a number of tools that you can use to block offensive comments.
Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android device and navigate to your profile tab by tapping on your display picture in the lower right corner.
Tap the hamburger button in the top right corner to access the side menu, then go to Settings> Privacy.
In the Interactions section, choose Comments.
To fend off offensive comments, you need the tools available under “Filters”
As soon as you activate the first option, “Hide offensive comments”, Instagram will automatically try to detect spam or inappropriate comments before they reach you and block them using an AI-based filter. In addition to the comments section of your posts, this setting also applies to any replies you may get from your stories and the chat stream of your live videos.
Instagram’s solution isn’t going to be effective every time, and some offensive comments can still slip through the cracks. However, since the algorithm behind it is constantly learning from the characteristics of you and other users, it is likely to get better over time.
The second option, Manual Filter, as the name suggests, allows you to select the words or phrases that are considered objectionable. If Instagram detects a comment that contains one of them, the social network will censor it.
When you enable the manual filter, Instagram will display a text box for you to type these words into. If you want to add more than one, don’t forget to separate them with a comma.
This feature is also available on the Instagram website. There, in the top right corner of the website, click your profile picture thumbnail and navigate to Settings> Privacy & Settings> Edit Comment Settings.
Whenever a comment matches one of these filters, it won’t be visible to anyone except the person who left it.
Under “Manual Filter” on your phone you will also find a third previously hidden option called “Filter most reported words”. Enabling this will delete the words and phrases that are often included in the comments you report to Instagram as abuse or spam.
To report an Instagram comment, tap a comment once to highlight it, then select the Exclamation Point button on the top menu bar.
Select “Report this comment” and provide the reason why you are reporting it.
While these comment filtering options are not bug-free, they can dramatically reduce the number of offensive comments that land on your photos and videos.
If there is a specific user who regularly leaves an inappropriate comment, you can also block them or choose specifically who can comment on your posts.
