Choosing an iPad this year may be crazy, but there is a logic.

This story is part of Black Friday 2019 our summary of the best deals on today's technology.

Among the Apple products there is a product that sets new standards time and again: the iPad. Apple's tablet offering is getting bigger and more confusing from year to year, but there's good news for every potential iPad buyer in this Black Friday . All options are great and iPad discounts are numerous . It's just a question of how much you want to pay.

Unlike last year, Apple has not released a new version of the iPad Pro Top Class . But the recent 10.2-inch budget iPad is better than ever. Or should you get the Mini ? Or the iPad Air ?

We dive in. (Incidentally, here is the proper etiquette for the purchase of technical gifts in general and here is what to consider when buying smart home gifts .)

The 10.2-inch iPad is perfectly fine.

iPad 10.2 inches (2019): The best for most

The 10.2-inch model is CNET's choice for editors for one reason: even though it's an older A10 Processor, it works flawlessly well with the latest iPadOS, has a slightly larger screen, supports the Apple Pencil and now works with Apple's older Smart Connector keyboard accessory. It is already on sale. However, I would consider the 128GB model as the 32GB model, especially if you plan to download movies. The ideal size that I would have recommended would have been 64 GB … which of course Apple does not sell.

One of the current best deals (which requires a Best Buy Reward Program) membership is below.

iPad (2018): Almost the same as the 10.2-inch iPad

You could save even more by purchasing the entry-level iPad last year's model which has the same A10 processor (and also supports Apple Pencil). It is currently not on sale, but we will update this post if this changes.

iPad Air (2019): Increase the Default

The difference between the entry-level 10.2-inch iPad and the iPad Air released this year is basically one better A12 processor and a slightly better larger screen (10.5 inches). It is also a bit thinner. Anyone who wants more graphics for photo or video work might consider this a way to separate the difference between the iPad and the iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro 2017 is like the iPad Air 2019, with a few extras

Save yourself the headache and know that the 10.5-inch iPad Air from 2019 is a slightly cheaper version of the 10.5 Inch iPad Pro of 2017 is. The 2017 Pro features a 120Hz screen with faster scrolling, better quad speakers, and slightly different cameras. If you can somehow get it for less than the air above, it's worth it! The iPad Pro 2017 is offered for sale below but is more expensive than the iPad Air.

iPad Pro (2018): The smartest option, but …

For the right price the iPad Pro from last year is still a great choice. Its A12X processor is extremely powerful, it has Face ID (ideal for an iPad), it supports newer pin accessory that is liable to charge on the side, its optional keyboard pocket is superb (and expensive) and it supports USB-C.

The smaller and improved specifications of the iPad Mini are unique.

iPad Mini (2019): Not a Bad Travel Offer

The smaller 7.9-inch iPad was upgraded this year with an A12 processor and pencil support, and it's a great one , smaller tablet. It's usually too expensive to justify entry via the iPad, but Black Friday deals could make it a tempting travel gadget. However, it is not very good for typing, and the $ 15 discount is not very far below the regular price.

Consider at least 64 GB of disk space. do not cut. Some models start with 64 GB, which is acceptable. If you want to download movies for travel or have many games on board, consider 128GB. I would not consider 256 GB and more if you are not a video editor.

For children, Fire tablets or Chromebooks are worth considering if you have Amazon Prime or live in the Amazon ecosystem. As ultra-budget tablets for videos and games they are absolutely fine.

Chromebooks are great for a secure, kid-friendly laptop alternative or for anyone who wants a laptop browser without a full computer price.

iPad at any price?

If you're feeling good about yourself, last year's iPad Pro is a great alternative for laptops, provided you can live iOS in Apple's controlled iOS world (iPadOS, the name of the iPad-focused) -13 update this year, has a much better browser and improved pencil support and file access). Apple could update the iPad Pro already in the spring of next year. Maybe you should also consider an IOU.

Cellular? Skip

The extra $ 129 for an LTE antenna (and the monthly cost of a mobile phone subscription on the iPad) is worthless, unless you want to use LTE on a tablet or have someone to pay the bill , Instead, connect to your phone.

Save some money on dongles, pencils, and other things.

Unfortunately, your purchase does not just end with the iPad. You'll need a protective case for this delicate tablet, and probably one of Apple's Pencil Pencils (the old one for most iPads and the new one for the iPad Pro 2018). A keyboard pocket is useful and costs extra. If you have the USB-C iPad Pro, you will also need a few dongles (like one for a headphone jack).
