Sometimes you want to emphasize certain words in your messages a little bit. If you are a WhatsApp user, you can add four types of highlighting either inline or via a menu.
The types of formatting that you can apply in a WhatsApp message are bold italics
crossed out and monospacing. To apply formatting manually, you must place a specific punctuation mark on either side of a word (or words):
- Bold: Place an asterisk (* bold *) on both sides.
- Italics: Place an underscore on both sides (_italic_).
- Strikeout: Put a tilde on both sides (crossed out ~).
- Monospace: Place three check marks on both sides (
When you send your message, the text appears in the selected formatting.
If you do not type much, especially if you want to use monospace (the back tick is often hidden on smartphones), you can also use the built-in formatting menu.
Long press The word to be formatted and the menu are displayed. For Android, the bold option is already visible. To access the other formatting options, tap the three dots on the right side of the menu or the BIU option in the menu for the iPhone.
Displays the other formatting options from which you can choose.
Select the desired formatting option – we will select Monospace – and the corresponding punctuation marks will be added automatically.
Tap the "Submit" button, which looks like an arrow, and your message will be sent using the formatting applied.
You can also add multiple formats to messages by using any combination of bold, italic, and strikeout.
The only limitation is monospace. This restriction applies because you can insert asterisks, underscores, or tildes into a message without changing the appearance of the text.
