Although the NES Classic was once hard to find and had stopped production at some point, it is now commercially available. This is exciting for fans of classic games. While it comes with 30 of the best NES games, even masterpieces like Super Mario Bros. 3 become old after some time.
Do not fret! It is possible to add more games to your NES Classic. The device is essentially a small computer running an emulator, a program that mimics the software on a console. With a few changes and without scruples, you can add any NES games to your Classic. Better yet, you do not have to do much hacking as some clever Nintendo fans have already developed programs to load games from a computer into a NES Classic.
A word of caution, however. While it is not illegal to change your NES Classic or download a program like the one used in our example. However, you need a digital copy of every game you want to install. For NES games, these are usually stored as ROM and are protected by copyright. If you want to buy ROMs, there are a number of popular sites that you need, but you may want to download illegal material.
If you choose to do so, you can hack your NES Classic to strengthen its library. To install games on the Classic, you will need a program like Hakchi that we will use.
Step 1: First connect your NES Classic to a Windows-based PC via a USB cable.
Step 2: Download the latest version of Hakchi from the developer site. It is delivered as a ZIP file. If you have Windows 10, you can just right-click on the file and select Extract All . Otherwise you will have to extract it with a program like WinZIP or 7-Zip.
Step 3: If you extracted the Hakchi program, run it.
Step 4: The program opens a window. Click on the button. Sync selected games to NES Mini .
Step 5: The program prompts you to save the original kernel image. Click Yes .
Step 6: Hakchi will then give you some instructions to follow. Make sure the power switch on the NES Classic is turned off and the device is connected via a USB cable.
Step 7: Next, hold down the reset button and press the power button (at standstill) hold down the reset button). Then release the reset button.
Step 8: In Hakchi, click the button that prompts you to install drivers.
Step 9: Once the program has completed unloading Click Synchronize … again in the kernel.
Step 10: When prompted, click Yes to flash the custom kernel. When the process is complete, click OK and you can start loading games.
Step 11: If you have the game files saved on your computer, click Games button in Hakchi. Select the files you want to add and click OK .
Step 12: When you've added all the games you want, click Synchronize . That's it!
