With Homebrew, your Wii U can run apps that Nintendo did not do for you. These include emulators, custom games and mods. You can even back up your games to a hard drive and run them from there.
This process is tedious but not too complicated and can be done by the average user. You do not risk damaging or damaging your console with normal homebrew, so it's completely safe.
Homebrew is a great way to bring an old console to life. There are many cool things you can do with a modified console.
- Emulators: Want to run Nintendo 64 games on your Wii U? With emulators, the Wii U can play almost all Nintendo games that are not available exclusively for 3DS or Switch.
- USB Game Loads: On your Wii U, you only have an awesome 1
- Cemu: Wii U-Homebrewing is the only way to legally play Wii U games on the PC, and Breath of the Wild is now running much better on Cemu than on Wii U and Nintendo Switch Reasons.
- GameCube Games: Nintendo has just flipped a switch to disable running GameCube games on your Wii U. The functionality is still disabled in the Wii mode. You can turn it on again and take full advantage of your console.
- Modding Games: For Smash 4 mods, there's an active scene, including Melee HD, which completely changes the gameplay. Homebrew is the only way to create mod games.
There is far too much content to detail everything here, but we will describe how you can make your console homebrewed and at a point where you can start installing what you want.
Prepare Your SD Card
You need to upload the homebrew files to your Nintendo Wii U. For this you need an SD card reader. If your computer does not have a computer, you can purchase an adapter for less than $ 10 from Amazon.
There are two ways that you can use for the homebrew process. The first uses a browser exploit to execute arbitrary code and load the homebrew launcher. From there, you can install a custom firmware package called Mocha CFW, which removes code signing and allows the homebrew channel to be installed as an app on your Wii U. After that, you can easily get in and out of homebrew applications.
The problem is, if you restart your Wii U, you will need to reuse the browser. This is annoying, especially with the latest firmware, where the exploit has a lower success rate. The solution to this is another exploit called Haxchi to override a Virtual Console DS game and turn it into a makeshift starter that completely replaces the browser exploit. But you need a legitimate DS game – no way to rob it, even with domestic magic. Currently, Brain Age is the cheapest DS game in the Nintendo eShop at $ 6.99, although others are supported. You can also get your Wii U to run the exploit on boot (Coldboot Haxchi), but this is not necessary and is one of the few things that can endanger your console, ie that your Wii U Hardware becomes unusable. Initial Setup
You need a few files, no matter which path you choose:
.zip files and place them in a new folder:
Unzip them all, remove the
.zip files, and you should have something that looks like this:
Next we go to the SD card. You want to make sure that it is formatted as FAT32 and has an allocation unit of 32,768 (32,000). You also need to use an MBR partition and no GPT. For some reason you can not call the SD card
After formatting, you'll need to create some empty folders into which to insert the homebrew files. You need to create
/ wiiu / apps and
/ install / hbc which should look like this:
/ install is used to install custom channels in the Wii U menu that we use for the homebrew channel. The
/ wiiu / apps folder is used for homebrew apps.
homebrew_launcher folder from your downloads to the
/ wiiu /. Folder apps . Drag
payload.elf to the folder
/ wiiu (not in the apps folder).
Open the contents of the folder
homebrew_launcher_channel.v2.1 and select all. Drag everything to the folder
/ install / hbc .
Your resulting file structure on your SD card should look like this:
If it fits, you're fine to go. Everything else is much easier to download to your Wii U once the Homebrew Launcher is loaded.
Loading the Homebrew Launcher onto your Wii U
The first exploit is loaded via the browser Your Wii U can connect to the Internet. Open the Internet browser on the Wii U and navigate to
wiiuexploit.xyz . You can bookmark this. If this site is not available or does not work, there are many other hosts for homebrew exploits.
When you are here, click the button to run the homebrew starter.
If this has worked, the console should be launched from the SD card into the Homebrew startup app. If it freezes, hold down the power button to turn off the console and try again. Freezing is completely random and much more common with current system firmware. Do not be surprised if this takes some time, and make sure your SD card is properly formatted if more than ten attempts are required.
Installing the Homebrew Channel
The Homebrew Channel is an easy-to-load loader for the Homebrew Launcher. Even if you only use Mocha CFW, you can load and unload games and apps without having to do the long browser exploit to access homebrew features.
Open the homebrew home screen and open the Homebrew App Store home screen.
In the App Store, search for "Mocha CFW" and "WUP Installer G2X" and install both.
The WUP GX2 installer installs channels and apps on your Wii U's home screen. Since this is not possible without disabling the code signature, you must first load into Mocha CFW.
Exit the homebrew app store and download Mocha CFW. Your Wii U should restart and display the Mocha splash screen when reloaded.
If you've run custom firmware, you'll need to install the homebrew channel for a more permanent fix. Run the browser again, open WUP Installer GX2, select "hbc" and press "Install".
It asks if it should be installed system NAND or USB, select "NAND". This installs the homebrew channel from the
/ install / hbc / folder on the SD card in the Wii U system memory. If this fails with "DSi exception occurred", restart the console and try again.
If this works, you can stop the homebrew and return to the Wii U home screen. You should see a new "Homebrew Launcher" icon.
You can now download and install the homebrew launcher whenever you want homebrew apps you want to use. Note that the Homebrew Launcher channel only works when you run Mocha CFW. If you turn off your console, you must rerun the browser exploit and reload Mocha.
Optional: Install Haxchi Haxchi replaces the browser exploit with an easy to run channel on your homescreen. This step is completely optional, but it will save you from running the browser exploit when you turn off the console. This is especially important if you are using the latest system firmware, as the browser exploit may take some time before you can work.
Remember that you need to pay Haxchi a legitimate copy of a Virtual Console DS game.
You need to add some more files to your SD card:
Download and unpack the file
Haxchi_v2.5u2.zip . Inside are two folders – one with Haxchi data at
/ haxchi / and one with the Haxchi installer at
/ wiiu / apps / haxchi .
Drag the whole
/ haxchi / folder to your SD card, and then drag the folder
/ wiiu / apps / into your SD Card
/ wiiu / apps / folder. Alternatively, you can download the Haxchi installer from the Homebrew App Store, but you still need the other folder
/ haxchi / .
By default, Haxchi tries to load into the custom firmware. However, this behavior can be blocked with another
config.txt file. Replace the configuration file in the
/ haxchi / folder with the downloaded folder. You can set this up to load Mocha automatically, but for now it will be manual.
You can then reload the Home Theater Installation Starter and open the Haxchi installer. The installer is a command line that prompts you to select a compatible game. Press the A button to select the game.
If you do not see any files here, you will need to download one from the eShop. Brain is the cheapest age at $ 6.99.
Another prompt appears asking if you are sure you want to install. Press the A button to install everything.
After completing the process, you should see a new channel on your homescreen that replaces the DS game that you can use to replace the Homebrew Launcher of the browser exploit. If you want to load the Homebrew Launcher from the Homebrew Launcher channel, you must run Mocha after running Haxchi.
If you still need too much for each reboot, you can upgrade to Coldboot Haxchi It's possible to brick your console if you do not do it properly, so we do not recommend it.
