You might be using Zoom on your iMac, playing a Steam game on your MacBook, or doing a work item on your iPad when you suddenly get a call on your iPhone. If the same Apple ID is used on all Apple devices, the call will ring not just on your iPhone, but on every damn device.
While this can be fine when you’re not in the middle of something, ringing the bell on your computer, iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone all at the same time is annoying to say the least. In the Settings app, tap Cellular. Depending on your carrier, this menu may look different from the one pictured below, but the setting we need should all be the same – “Calls on other devices”. Find that and open the menu. If you have multiple cellular plans on your iPhone, the option is in both the Primary and Secondary plan settings.
Now you have two options to prevent calls from showing up on other devices.
- Switch off individual devices. If you find it useful when your Mac rings but your other Apple devices don’t, you can turn off the switches next to any Apple device you want to turn off calls for. Each device has its first name and device name so that you know which device is which. If this option is disabled, the device will no longer receive calls.
- Turn off all calls on other devices. If you’d like to turn off everything and restrict phone calls to your iPhone, turn off the “Allow calls on other devices” switch. Even if you are connected to Wi-Fi and are close to your other Apple devices, all calls will only show up on your iPhone.
If you have multiple cellular plans, you need to adjust the settings for “Calls on other devices” for each plan individually.
If you don’t want to deactivate the function for any of your devices, you can deactivate the WiFi on your iPhone at any time. This will temporarily disable the “Allow calls on other devices” feature. It won’t work again until you connect to Wi-Fi and are around your other devices. Most of us do need WiFi, however, so it’s not really any better than normal call settings.
