The long-awaited Red Dead Redemption 2 hits consoles around the world on October 26, bringing with it a vast, open world that can be explored on horseback.
But dipping into such a big game requires careful preparation. After all, you would not go on an Arctic expedition in a three-piece suit unless you're doing some sort of daredevil duty.
So I prepared to tackle this game. You do not have to follow the guide exactly, just be aware that deliberately ignoring my advice could spoil the gameplay for you. And you do not want that, right?
Get the equipment
OK, let's start with the most obvious. It's a gorgeous looking game, so you need some hardware to justify it. Take a big 4K and HDR-enabled TV and an Xbox One X ($ 460 on Amazon) or which will be released at the same time. I use my 55-inch cello QLED television, which is not only razor-sharp, but also has gorgeous colors thanks to the . Nice things.
Next, sort out your sound. Beneath my TV is an Edifier S50 soundbar that will wrap me in all the sounds of the Old West so far that I think I'm riding beside them. I'm scared to get shot, get dysentery or get shot. At least that's my hope.
Suffice to say, if you need recommendations for the best TVs or the best soundbars, we've got you covered.
Do not forget to buy. Just schedule a serious download or install time – it's a nearly 100GB monster.
Make Your Excuses
When the game lands, you'll need to invest a few solid days straight away. I booked Friday and Monday from work to give me a full four days to play the game. Your work may not be as accommodating as mine (thanks, guys!), But try to keep at least the whole weekend off.
Intended to be with friends? Cancel – The game will provide you with new friends. And a. Agreed to help a colleague move? This type is always letting you go, does not enable that kind of behavior. It's time he spun up the money to find some right people.
A quick message of "An international ambassador needs my help" should be enough to satisfy all those who have been waiting for you and certainly will not ask follow-up questions, so do not worry about it for a second.
Arrange your room
Now that you have set up your TV, you should have a good sitting position in front of it. Do not be too far away, otherwise you will lose some of this immersive, cinematic feeling. Also do not sit in a strange angle. Do not be afraid to move your furniture and just tell your spouse / housemates / parents, I said it's fine.
Now I know this is trashy, but I actually brought a collapsible camping chair to play the game. Forget about how bad it looks, this thing keeps the buttocks wonderful for longer hours of gameplay, and even better, comes with a cup holder in the armrest. As a camping chair, it's easier to fake that I'm really sitting around the campfire with the gang – after all, I can not remember John Marston relaxing on a three-seater couch in the Great Plains.
Finally, I took care to close the blinds. I want to dive fully into the game and not think about the outside world and all the fun people out there with loved ones and cherished acquaintances, so it seems like a good tactic to physically block them. It also prevents any glare on the TV and disfigures the beautiful graphics.
Gather Your Food
You still have to eat while you play the game, as according to my doctor the screen work is not enough adult human male for a longer time alive. I am waiting for a second opinion.
So what should you prepare for a Red Dead 2 weekend? For me, the choice was obvious; a huge, slow-cooked beef chili. Sure, that's the kind of food RD2 protagonist Arthur Morgan would cook for the gang and serve with the one I'm sure would be a winning smile and a compliment to his roommates ("Gorgeous shirt, Friend, make sure you do not ") spill some of that delicious slow-cooked beef chili on it! ")
It's also easy to do: get a big chunk of beef breast, fry the outside and toss a chopped tomato sauce, beef broth, diced red and yellow peppers, white onion, garlic and a variety of spices. I also brought some butternut squash. Let it simmer for 8 hours or so and then chop the beef before you stir it all together. Serve with tortilla chips and sour cream. I also make cornbread, although I write that before I did that, so it could be a disaster. If you want the whole recipe for all this, meet me on Twitter.
I also got some Maryland cookies – because of America – and a selection of Goose Island beers because they were the only ones in my London store that were actually brewed in the US. So you are exactly what the people in the Old West would drink, as far as I'm concerned, I was only once in the US (Florida) when I was 4 years old.
Prepare Your Thoughts
Once everything is prepared, you need to take your time. Leave your house and take the time to say goodbye to real nature, because it will take some time to see it again. Go to your nearest park and take everything with you. I took the bus up the road to a large moor area and sat down for a while, imagining myself as a cowboy. A cowboy playing Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes on his iPhone ($ 1,115 at Amazon Marketplace) while listening to podcasts. That kind of cowboy.
It helped me get used to the wide open plains, the sounds of the wind, and the sounds of the jumbo jets that flew in from Stansted Airport – not all of which are guaranteed to appear in the game.
The other advantage, of course, is to give you some exercise and stretch those muscles before spending the next few days moving them. Sure, you have to go back and forth to the fridge and the toilet (those beers, man), but that will not lessen the chili's wealth, so make sure you're ready for the challenge.
If you ticked everything on this list, you are a true hero and I can not help you prepare for what Red Dead 2 has in store for you. Now it's up to you, old buddy, so sit back, fill your stomach with chilli and get ready for something that I hope will make a wonderful ride.
