How to reduce background noise and echoes for higher quality voice memos in iOS 14 «iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

Your iPhone’s Voice Memos app is a simple tool that lets you quickly record lectures at school, jam sessions in the studio, or just verbal notes for yourself. While it’s a straightforward app, there are a few hidden features that you may not know about that can improve the quality of your recordings.

One feature that may be news to your ears is the ability to record in lossless quality audio. Another allows you to use an external microphone for higher quality stereo recordings. Without these, however, there is an even simpler setting that you can enable to enhance your audio files stored in Voice Notes.

Apple introduced the Enhance Recording feature in iOS 1

4 for Voice Memos, which uses machine learning to reduce background noise and echoes and make the recording clearer and easier to listen to. If you are having trouble getting excellent quality audio recordings from your iPhone, then this mechanism is a must to try.

In Voice Notes, tap an existing recording to expand your options. In the advanced playback controls on the left, tap the ellipsis (•••) to bring up the action sheet. Select “Edit recording” from the list.

Here you can trim your recording, but also improve it with a single touch of a button. At the top left of the editor you can see a magic wand that you can use to improve the recording function. Tap this icon. The button’s background will turn blue to let you know it’s enabled.

Now tap the play button to listen to the recording. As mentioned earlier, your iPhone will do its best to minimize background noise and other disturbances like echoes. If you want to compare the sound quality, turn off advanced recording and play the file without it.

Before and after comparisons are important because Enhance Recording doesn’t always “improve” the audio in every audio file. This can make some sound recordings worse. When you’ve chosen the best version, with or without a magic wand, tap Done to save your changes.

If you change your mind about the sound recording, you can always go back to the Voice Note Editor and turn off the “Enhance recording for the file” option. Just like changes in the Photos app aren’t forever, changes in Voice Notes can be undone.
