When it comes to digital security, one of the best ways to protect yourself is to use two-factor authentication. Most apps nowadays support this, including Facebook, a website where the more privacy you can afford, the better. However, of the two 2FA options available for Facebook, only one should be used because the other shares your phone number with the world, which poses a major privacy issue.
The two options you receive for Facebook use either SMS texts or an authentication app, the first one being the offender you want to avoid. On the one hand, SMS-based 2FA is the least secure form of 2FA. If you use your phone number with Facebook's 2FA or list your number in any way via Facebook, Facebook uses your number to recommend your profile to contacts, it's searchable and can be shared with Instagram and WhatsApp.
If you've already set up 2FA on your phone number on Facebook, we'll show you how to completely remove your digits from the site, and instead run by setting up 2FA with a third-party authentication app. An authentication app serves Facebook as a second password to confirm your identity. Authenticators use their own encryption and security measures that blow SMS out of the water. Best of all, you do not have to spend a dime on these apps if you do not want to.
: Select a Third-Party Authentication App
Before we open Facebook at all, you can save yourself some time later, downloading a third-party authentication app is now. Remember, you can download this app either on the iPhone or Android phone on which you use Facebook, or on a secondary device to increase security. It's up to you to weigh the safety and comfort of each option.
Which app you choose is up to you. Facebook mentions both Google Authenticator and Duo Mobile, but there are many more options, such as Authy (our favorite), each with its own advantages and disadvantages. If you need help choosing the right 2FA app, take a look at our summary of the best apps.
