How to Share Your Screen on Facebook Messenger for iPhone and Android

When you’re trying to help someone troubleshoot a smartphone problem, having access to the screen makes things much easier. Instead of installing a dedicated screen sharing app, you can use Facebook Messenger to share your screen on iPhone and Android.

How to share your screen in Messenger for Android

Just like with Skype, Facebook Messenger lets you share your screen right from your Android smartphone.

First, open the Facebook Messenger app on Android and navigate to a conversation. Then tap the Video button to start a video call.

After the video call starts (this feature works for group video calls and Facebook rooms), swipe up from the bottom toolbar to see more options.

Here tap on the “Share screen” button.

The first time you use this feature, an introductory window for the feature appears. Here tap on “Next”. (This screen will no longer appear.)

Now Android asks if you want to share your screen with the Messenger app. Tap the “Start Now” button.

Messenger is now sharing your screen. You can swipe up or press the home button to go to your device’s home screen. You can look around and navigate to any screen you want to share. As soon as you share your screen, Messenger will deactivate your camera.

You can see the other participants in the picture-in-picture window. You can tap it to expand the window and return to full screen mode.

To stop sharing your screen, return to the Messenger app and tap the Stop button in the floating box.

You are now back to normal video calling, business as usual.

How to share your screen in Messenger for iPhone

Sharing screens on iPhone is slightly different.

Open the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone and open the conversation you want to share your screen in. Then tap the Video button in the top right corner of the screen to start the video call.

When they answer, the video call begins. Now swipe up to see more options.

Here tap on the “Share screen” button.

In the introductory pop-up, select the “Start Sharing” option.

You’ll see the standard iOS broadcast popup that you use to share your iPhone screen with various apps. Here, make sure the Messenger app is selected, then tap the Start Broadcast button.

The Messenger app will now deactivate your camera and share your screen. You can go to the home screen and navigate to different apps to share your screen.

Unlike Android, the Messenger app does not display the picture-in-picture window of the other participants in the call. If you share your screen, you won’t be able to see the video, but you can still hear what they are saying.

If you see a red pill in the upper left corner of the iPhone 24/7, it means you are sharing the screen.

When you’re done, return to the Messenger app. On the video calling interface, tap the stop button in the floating box.

Messenger will now stop sharing your iPhone screen.


Not everyone uses Facebook Messenger. If you want to share your screen with your work colleagues, you can also do so in Zoom or Google Meet.
