You have an Amazon Echo device with Alexa fully set up and working at home. Now you are traveling and want to take your device with you to use it in a hotel room or another location. Can your echo also work outside your home base? Sure, if you know the tricks.
You need to set up your echo for the new Wi-Fi network, and there's an extra step in getting Alexa to help you in the new locations.
Before you drag Echo device with you, check with your hotel. Some hotels, such as Wynn Las Vegas, have equipped rooms with echo speakers. Other chains that want to equip rooms with echoes are Marriott Hotels, Westin Hotels & Resorts, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, Aloft Hotels and Autograph Collection Hotels. Amazon even offers a special Alexa for Hospitality language assistant that helps guests order towels, control room temperature, find nearby restaurants, and leave the hotel.
If your hotel or resort does not echo you, no problem. You can take any echo device on the road. An elegant Echo Dot is a good travel companion as it fits easily in your suitcase or backpack. If you want something visual, an echo show will work well, but the smaller Echo Spot is easier to take along. Otherwise, you can just pack your regular Amazon Echo. Whatever device you choose, the process is the same for setting up in a new location.
Oh, and if you just want to chat with Alexa to listen to music or audiobooks, play games, communicate with other people, and get information, you do not have to take your device with you. All this and more can be achieved with the Alexa app. Just open the app, tap the blue circle below and ask.
However, if you still want an echo as a travel companion – you might want to use it for local information or hope to play some games – read on.
