Google TV streaming devices have a home screen with recommendations. There are many ways to tweak this. However, if you prefer a less crowded UI, you can disable it too.
The Google TV home screen on devices like Chromecast with Google TV is very different from the company̵
If you turn on Apps only mode, you can turn it off most from the recommendations, but there are still a few catches.
CONNECTED: How to customize the Google TV home screen
First, apps-only mode also removes your access to the Watchlist feature and your Google Play Movies library. However, you can still broadcast using the Google TV mobile app. Second, the Search tab and Google Assistant features are disabled.
If you’re ok with this, simply select your profile icon in the top right corner of the home screen to get started.
Choose Settings from the pop-up menu.
Choose Accounts & Sign In.
Select your Google account (the same account that is connected to the home screen).
Scroll down and toggle the “Apps only” option on.
A confirmation screen will appear explaining everything that will be disabled in apps-only mode. Select “Next” to continue.
Your Google TV home screen will now look like the picture below.
There are still some recommendations on the top “Highlights” line, but everything else is removed.
While it’s disappointing that you can’t use the Google Assistant in apps-only mode, this interface may be preferable for those who want to keep it simple. Only your installed apps will now show up on your home screen.
Note that you need to turn off apps-only mode to install apps or games on Google TV.
