It really can compete with other flagship phones while keeping costs down.
It's a fantastic device, but the rest of the magic lies in unlocking the bootloader and adjusting that beast. By installing TWRP, Magisk, custom ROMs and the many other mods available, this already great device is taken to the next level. Just like Google for the Pixel phones, OnePlus makes unlocking the bootloader easy, so you can start the modding adventure.

Step 1: Enable Developer Options
The bootloader is always locked by default, disabled for security purposes, so that no changes are made to the system. To prevent the average consumer from seeing the setting, you can find it in your phone's developer options, which are intended for advanced users only. To show this menu again, navigate to the following location in the main settings of your phone.
Settings -> Over the phone
Now that you're in the "About the phone" menu, you'll need to find the "Build" tap the number seven times in a row. After successful completion, you will receive a toast notification with the note "You are now a developer". You may be prompted to enter your password or PIN. After that, however, you will receive a toast notification.
Now that the developer options are no longer hidden from you, you can enter the Unload Bootloader setting. Return to the main Settings menu and select System then Developer Options. The setting you are looking for is called "OEM Unlock". Once you find it, tap it once to get a prompt as before. If necessary, enter your password or PIN and tap "Activate" to confirm your selection.
While still on the Developer Options page, scroll down if necessary and look for a setting called Advanced Reboot. Touch the button to activate it. This will help you later in the manual the work. Essentially, you can boot in fastboot mode without having to access a computer or using keyboard shortcuts.
After enabling the Advanced Reboot option, press Long press the power button to bring up the power menu for your device. Tap the "Bootloader" option to have your phone immediately start booting the Fastboot main menu.
Once You're Restarted When the phone restarts, you should be in the main menu of fastboot mode. Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable and let the phone sit as follows.
To unlock the bootloader, you need the ADB and Fastboot files on your computer to use the necessary commands to your phone. You can download Google's SDK Platform Tools package, which already contains everything you need in one folder – it could not be easier! Follow the link below to remove everything, then go to the next step in this guide.
Opening a command window in the platform-tools folder is the next thing you need to do to unlock the bootloader. You must ensure that the Command window is open directly in the Platform Tools folder so that the ADB and Fastboot commands can communicate with the phone. Follow the instructions below to make the settings, and then proceed to the next step.
Before Starting If you unlock the boot loader, you must back up the data before continuing with this step. The phone performs a mandatory factory reset.
After editing your data as needed, you must enter a command The window has been opened in the platform-tools folder before proceeding. In this command window, enter the following command, and then press Enter.
fastboot oem unlock
Note: Mac and Linux users will most likely need to add a period and a slash before entering any of the following commands Commands listed here (eg ./fastboot oem unlock) ,
Once the above command has been transferred from your computer to your phone, it should be on the bootloader that unlocks the screen. Use the volume keys to highlight Unlock Bootloader, and then press the power key to confirm your selection.
The phone should now automatically start the factory reset and delete your data. If not, use the volume keys to navigate through the Fastboot menu to select the Start option. Press the on / off button to confirm your selection as before. You can then restart the phone again. Once you see the "Hello" screen, you've made it to the end of the tutorial – your bootloader is now unlocked. Now the real fun can start!
Perform the initial setup as if you were using a brand new phone to get things working again. Each time you restart, you will see a message stating that the bootloader is unlocked and that the integrity of the software can not be guaranteed. Do not worry, this is the default message informing you that the bootloader is unlocked – nothing to worry about.
