The return of the Nokia smartphone brand has brought much excitement to smartphone enthusiasts around the world, as well as disappointment. The disappointment came from the fact that the Nokia 8 boot loader could not be unlocked
HMD Global – the company that revived the Nokia smartphone brand – recently switched gears and announced that it would allow users to unlock the Nokia 8 bootloader enable.
When the Nokia 8 Bootloader is unlocked, users who own the device can install custom restores, flash new ROMs, and access various features and settings that were previously impossible.
Unlocking a smartphone's boot loader may be a daunting task, but it's actually pretty easy to split it into steps. Note, however, that unlocking the Nokia 8 Bootloader will delete the device . It's a good idea to back up your personal information and use a backup system to make a copy of your apps, settings, and other data. Read our best practices article for this procedure.
Once you've created your backups, you can unlock the Nokia 8 Bootloader!
Basic Steps to Unlock the Nokia 8 Bootloader
To unlock your bootloader, you will do the following:
- Register your Nokia 8 to prove that you are the rightful owner are.
- Download ADB and install it on your computer (Windows, Mac or Linux)
- Connect your Nokia 8 to your computer with a high-quality USB cable.
- Flashing your unlock code.
- Unlock Your Bootloader.
- Complete the Initial Setup on your Nokia 8  If you have never performed these steps on a previous phone, we strongly recommend that you read this entire article before using any of the steps This will ensure that you are not surprised in the middle of the process with a task that you do not want to perform.
Step 1: Register your Nokia 8
So prevent unauthorized persons from being unlocked Your Nokia 8 bootloader HMD Global requires you to register your device and receive an encrypted unlock code.
To start this process, visit open the special page of HMD Global for unlocking. HMD Global requires you to create an account and agree to some terms and conditions. Signing up is very self-explanatory and should only take a minute
Once you've created an account and signed in, you'll be redirected to a new page with instructions on it To download a special Android app that has been specifically designed to give you an unlock code on your Nokia 8. Download the app and install it on your Nokia 8 (be sure to allow the installation of unknown apps in your device's settings)
Once installed, open the app and follow the instructions. Give HMD Global an active e-mail address and click "Submit".
After you click Submit, you will see a secret code. Go back to the appropriate unlock page and enter your secret code and the active email address you specified in the app.
Finally, you will receive an e-mail with a link to download a special TXT file named "unlock.key". Download this file to your computer and continue to the next step!
Step 2: Download and install ADB
The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is part of the Developer Toolset Android Software Development Kit (SDK) Simply put, ADB allows you to interact with your Android device from a command prompt on your computer.
Visit the official Android developer website to download ADB for your particular computer operating system. How to install and set everything up.
If you have never used ADB before, you should stop here for the time being and familiarize yourself with it.The next steps will assume that you are familiar with ADB and prompts Do not, you'll be confused pretty quickly!
Once you've established ADB and are familiar with it, you should enable USB debugging on your Nokia 8. If you do not know how to do this, follow these steps:
- Open Android Settings and find your Android build number.
- Tap the build number repeatedly until you see the developer options are enabled.
- Visit the Developer Options in Settings and then enable USB Debugging.
If ADB is installed, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Connect your Nokia 8 to your computer
In the previous two steps you've prepared, but now it's time to actually start the unlock process.
Before you proceed, make sure you have a high quality USB cable to connect your Nokia 8 to your computer. Preferably, you should use the cable that came with the device. If this is not possible, use a short, thick cable for this operation. Be sure to avoid using cheap, thin or long cables, as this could cause problems for your device.
To begin, put your Nokia 8 in download mode. To do this, you must first turn off your Nokia 8. Then hold down Volume Down and turn the power back on. If your device starts up normally (ie you're finally taken to your home screen), it did not work. Turn off the device and try again. Make sure you hold down the "Volume Down" key.
When in Download mode, you can connect your Nokia 8 to the computer using the USB cable. Proceed to the next step.
Step 4: Flashing Your Unlock Code
Remember the file "unlock.key" that you downloaded in the first step? You will need that! Locate this file and move it to the folder where you installed ADB. For example, on Windows, this would be % USERPROFILE% adb-fastboot platform-tools .
Start a command prompt in the ADB folder and enter the following command:
You should see something that looks like the screenshot above with a serial number and the word "device" next to it. If this is not the case, your computer does not recognize the Nokia 8, the prompt is not in the correct folder, or you missed something in the previous steps.
Once you know your device is properly connected, upload the unlock.key file with the following command:
fastboot flash unlock unlock.key
Once you've successfully flashed the unlock key , go to the next step  Step 5: Unlock the Nokia 8 Bootloader
Up to this point, everything you did is reversible or does not affect your Nokia 8. But this next step is the point of no return – once you have completed this step, there is no turning back! Your Nokia 8 has an unlocked bootloader and your device will be deleted.
If you think about it, now is the time to turn back. Just remove the phone and reboot it, everything will be done the way you left it.
When you're ready to unlock your boot loader, complete this last step by typing the following at your command prompt:
unlock fastboot oem
If everything was done correctly, you should in the command prompt the text "unlock success!" are displayed. You have an unlocked boot loader!
Before you do anything else, you should restart your computer device, but does not use the power button . Use the command prompt instead:
Your device is restarting
Step 6: Setting up your Nokia 8
When your Nokia 8 restarts Has been reset to factory settings, so it will be like taking the phone out of the box. You must agree to Google's terms, sign in to your Google Account, and so on, just as you originally did.
