  Wyze Cam Pan
Josh Hendrickson

We like the original Wyze Cam and recommend it with a few caveats. Our main complaint, lack of moving, is solved by the new, affordable and appropriately named Wyze Cam Pan.

Here's what we

  • Cheap
  • Solid Basic Features
  • App receives consistent updates
  • ] Notifications help if they are timely

And what we do not

  • Swing motor is loud [19659004] No privacy trigger
  • No desktop app
  • Sometimes notifications may be slow

The Wyze Cam Pan continues the tradition of offering a surprising number of features at a fraction of the price of comparable cameras.

Wyze achieves this by licensing cheaper Chinese hardware and creating a custom firmware and app. Due to the effort, the Wyze Cam Pan drops to around $ 38. This is much cheaper than offers from other than WLANs that are not arbitrary names of eBay or Amazon, but with features that are comparable to cameras that cost 2-3 times more. Let's take a look at how the Wyze Cam Pan compares to its predecessor and its competitors.

Wyze Cam Pan and Wyze Cam have many similarities

Before we know what makes the Wyze Cam Pan different, let's see the similarities with the existing Wyze Cover cam. Both cameras feature motion detection capabilities that allow users to store 12-second clips for free on an AWS server. You can add a local microSD card and record it continuously.

When your MicroSD card is full, the camera deletes old videos to make room for new ones. How much video you can keep depends on the size of the card you are using. Both cameras offer bidirectional communication with the Wyze app and similar (though not identical) 1080p image quality, and both cameras have night vision capabilities.

Panning movements show the entire room

The Wyze Cam Pan is significantly larger than the Simplisafe camera, although the latter can not move. Josh Hendrickson

Out of the box, you'll spot the difference between the regular Cam and the Cam Pan right away. None of them can win a beauty contest, but while the original camera looks like a small, one-eyed robot, the Cam Pan resembles a toothpaste box with a built-in camera. Honestly, the unbelievably simple look of Wyze Cams is acceptable. Fashion is not a priority for a Wi-Fi camera, and using a simplified box-shaped design to reduce costs while retaining other features is a good compromise.

Of course, the Wyze Cam Pan can pan. Set it on a table in the middle of the room and can be rotated 360 degrees. The camera also has a tilt function. You can use the Wyze app to pull a video stream to move your camera left, right, or left, and set waypoints for automatic forward and backward scanning. Theoretically, waypoint scanning can use fewer cameras in a single room. If you enable motion tracking, the camera will follow any detected motion, such as A person walking through the room. And even better, you can combine waypoints and motion tracking.

Mounting options are more limited

The bottom of the Wyze Cam Pan shows the mounting screw
There is a mounting screw, but the Wyze Cam Pan does not have the flexibility legs of the Wyze Cam.

But all this has some disadvantages. The original Wyze Cam features a magnetic base, and comes with a customized double-sided adhesive tape and a matching metal base, as well as an incredibly flexible base. You could stick it to a fridge or to a wall and then adjust the position of the camera to record the room.

Unfortunately, you can not mount the Cam Pan so easily. The necessity of the box shape prevents the sheer flexibility of the original camera. And although Wyze apparently offers a $ 9 mount, the link was written at the time of this review because it resulted in a 404 error and we were unable to test it. The easiest way is to place them on a flat surface such as a table.

Another disadvantage is the noise generated by the engine. Originally, I had a Cam Pan placed in a central location of the living room and set both track movements and waypoints. My family asked me to turn that off. The sound of the engine is loud enough to be noticeable, which of course causes the camera to track the camera as it follows them. Even if you sat on the couch watching TV, the occasional whimpering of the camera turned out to be a distraction. In the garage or in other rooms that are not so heavily used, this is not a problem.

And as with the original Wyze camera, the Cam Pan does not have a built-in privacy screen. At less than $ 40, that's hard to fault, especially when other, more expensive cameras like the Nest Cam do not provide privacy screens.

Great apps improve the hardware

App updates mean that I no longer need this band over the IR lights. Josh Hendrickson

Get low-cost hardware that works exceptionally well. And an app connects Wyze regularly. As I checked the camera, Wyze sent two updates resolving two of my key issues.

First, Wyze added the ability to turn off the IR lights while the night mode was on. With this update, using a Wyze Cam at night through a window is much more practicable, so far it has been best to tape over the IR lights.

Second, with the latest update, you can now view multiple live streams once. Previously you had to select each camera individually to see a live stream. This update allows you to group cameras and display these streams on one screen.

The app is not perfect. I have a camera pointing through a window at my driveway, and notifications of detected movement are displayed. Often this notification comes three to five minutes late. I left my house, started the car, pulled away from the driveway and made my way before I received a notification. At other times, however, it was almost instantaneous. I have an extremely fast internet (500 Mbps) so my network should not be the problem.

I also had difficulty in selecting motion sensitivity. By default, only someone passing in front of the camera will trigger a notification. But at night, any car driving down the street leads to notifications. Therefore, I would like to adjust the sensitivity during the day, but at night to dial back. But to be honest, the camera was not designed for shooting through a window.

At this point, the most noticeable missing feature is a desktop app. If you want to watch camera streams, you need to go to a mobile app. But a desktop app would be useful, especially if videos need to be displayed on a much larger screen.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the disadvantages are small when compared to the extremely low cost of the Wyze Cam Pan. You can easily spend five times more on other cameras and not get much better hardware. And while you might get smarter software with a service like Nest Aware, this requires an additional subscription fee. Nest does not offer a swivel camera, so you lose this feature.

You will spend about $ 38, whether you buy them from Amazon or directly from Wyze. The base price of Amazon is technically higher at $ 37.47, but it comes with the shipping of Prime. Ordering directly at Wyze costs $ 29.99, but costs $ 7.99 for a total price of $ 37.98. Wyze's four to seven day promise is slower than Amazon's, so if you order a Wyze Cam Pan and Prime, Amazon is probably the best choice.

The Wyze Cam Pan is not perfect like the Wyze Cam, but it does not have to be for the price. For less than $ 40, you'll "hardly wait" and instead, you'll get something that's really great. Yes, there are better and smarter cameras. However, if you want to equip your house with multiple cameras, it is difficult to recommend neither the Wyze Cam nor the Wyze Cam Pan.
