Things to Know About Geeks
In Computer Lingo, small USB-based hardware additions are referred to as "what"?
Computer users around the world can often expand their computers with USB-based extensions. Do you need to upgrade your Wi-Fi? With a USB solution, you can perform plug-and-play operations for faster speeds. Do you need to read SD cards on your laptop, but there is no reader installed? There is also a USB-based solution for this.
These small USB-based hardware extensions for your computer are called dongles. The etymology of the term is unclear, but it was suspected that it was an adulteration of the word "Dangle" because early computer dongle dangled on the PC ports to which it was attached.
The original dongles were safety-oriented: the dongle acted as a hardware-based key to either the computer itself or the software on it. Although these types of dongles still exist, they have been surpassed by general hardware dongles, which cost-effectively expand the hardware capabilities of the user's computer.
