Within minutes of the debate closed on Wednesday, the Biden campaign tweeted a photo of Joe Biden with a fly swatter and the caption, “Pitch in $ 5 to help this campaign fly.”
In case you missed it, a fly landed very clearly on Vice President Mike Pence’s stiff coiffed head as he debated Senator Kamala Harris. The fly lingered and the internet couldn’t stop talking about it.
And within a few hours, said an election spokesman, the almost 35,000 claps were sold out.
“We saw the internet and our supporters share a viral moment online, so our digital team got together on the fly,” said Zach McNamara, the merchandise director for the Biden campaign. The goal was to show that “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris always choose truth over lies, science over fiction, and unity over division,” he added.
Etsy sellers are also in vogue: various T-shirts with the words “Fly Will Vote” and “Truth Over Flies” next to the Biden Harris logo. An Etsy seller, Artemisa Clark, is selling a face mask with a photo of Mike Pence with the bow tie on. She said she has already sold 1,666 masks and that she also sells t-shirts and sweatshirts with the picture on it.
