Instagram: How to delete or disable your account

Instagram is my social media jam. I share photos with friends and see their pictures. It's a happy place for me, or at least it was like that. Instagram has changed dramatically over the years. There is advertising everywhere and it feels more like Snapchat and Facebook than the hip photo-sharing site it once was. To make matters worse, researchers found that published user contact information, including phone numbers and email addresses, on the Instagram website . All of this has brought me to the point where I want to delete Instagram.

If you are like me and want to delete or disable your Instagram account. That's how it's done.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to delete your Instagram account from the app. Watch the video for deleting Instagram at the top of CNET's YouTube channel to follow up or get an overview.

If you need a break or are ready to leave Instagram, you have a few options for your account.

Delete or Disable?

There are two main ways to get away from Instagram: deleting or disabling. If you delete your account, it will be permanently removed – like Thanos Snap Permanent. Your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers list are gone forever – SNAP!

If you disable your account, it will be hidden until you reactivate it by logging in again. Pack biscuits and put them on the back of your cupboard so you're not tempted to crush them all in one session. I said too much.

Request your downloadable data: photos, videos and more.

Before you decide to delete or disable, take a moment to download your data. If you permanently delete your account, this is the only time you can retrieve photos or videos you've taken or comments you'd like to save. Seriously, you do not want this photo to go away forever when you meet Laura Dern /2019/07/27/40a5d45d-d3a5-4e5f-b709-adf3652d43bd/60e3a7e3-70cf-40b2-86b7-f5cd2b522ce5.jpg[1965901360e3a7e3-70cf-40b2-5c5AlsopartofanencodingeventforyoungwomenwiththeTravelpageBookingcomsite

You can request a data download either through a web browser or through the app itself. Just a head up, that's not an immediate process. Once you've requested that you download your data, it may take hours for Instagram to compile all the data for you to download.

Download the data from the Instagram app:

Go to your profile.

2. Tap the Hamburger menu icon at the top right, also known as the three horizontal lines.

3. At the bottom right corner of the screen, tap Settings .

4. Tap Security .

5. Then tap Download Data .

6. Enter your E-mail address there and click on the blue button Request download .

Download data from a web browser:

1. Go to your profile.

2. Click the Edit Profile button.

3. Click Privacy and Security .

4. Scroll down to the data download area and click Request Download .

5. From there, enter your e-mail address and click on the blue button Request download .

Your Instagram data can now be downloaded.

Next you will receive an e-mail with the subject line: your Instagram data. Open the message and there will be a link to your data. This link is only valid for four days. It can also take up to 48 hours for Instagram to send you the link. In my experience, it took about an hour.

Clicking on the link will download a folder of your photos and videos. There are also separate files for everything, from your profile information to your comments. Instagram inserts it into a JSON file that stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It uses text to display data that is easily readable by humans.

The only way to find these files was to drag them into a Firefox browser window. It's a bit ugly, but you can read captions, comments and even your profile information if you want. If you're having trouble viewing the files in Firefox, you'll find a Mozilla website with settings to check.

If you're using the Google Chrome browser, you'll need to download an extension to view the JSON files. Apple's Safari also requires an extension to view JSON files.

Instagram simplifies deleting your account

The quickest way to delete your account is to visit this page to delete your account through a web browser.

You can not delete your account directly from the Instagram app. You can, however, navigate to the "Delete Account" page, which starts in the app.

Delete Instagram by starting in the app.

. 1 Go to your profile.

2. Tap the Hamburger menu icon at the top right (the three horizontal lines).

3. At the bottom right corner of the screen, tap Settings .

4. Tap Help .

Finally tap on the red button Permanently delete my account . A window will ask if you really want to delete your account. Touch OK .

Take a break by disabling your account.

If you just want to take a break from the IG or are on the fence to permanently delete your account, I recommend disabling it instead. The quickest way to do this is to use a web browser and go to the "Temporarily disable your account" page.

To access the deactivation page through a web browser:

1. Visit the Instagram website

2. Log in to your account.

3. Click on your profile.

4. Click the button Edit Profile .

5. Scroll down and then click on Temporarily disable my account .

You can also navigate through the app to the same page, but this is extremely tedious. Follow the instructions above to go to the Delete Your Account page in the Instagram app. After loading this page, click the link to page Temporarily disable your account .

If you only need a break from Instagram, temporarily disable your account.

Instagram

Select a reason to disable your account from the drop-down menu. Then click the blue Temporarily disable account button. A window will ask if you really want to delete your account. Touch OK .

There! You're done and Insta-free. But if you ever want to immerse yourself in the world of influencers and IGTV, you can open your dormant account. To re-enable your account, simply log back in to your app or online.
