iOS 13 is a pretty big update for your iPhone.

Jason Cipriani / CNET

Apple released iOS 13 and almost immediately iOS 13.1 along with iPadOS, which specialized in tablets. iOS 13.1 came just days after the launch of the iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max . With the release of iOS 13, Apple has made your iPhone faster, smarter and safer. New features include the gesture-based QuickPath keyboard (19459014), an Unknown Caller Blocking Tool (19459005), new photo editing tools (19459014), and a dedicated Dark Mode (19459005)].

There are also new maps tools that finally close the loophole to Android, security features such as Sign in to Apple and the ability to customize Memoji avatars . New tools in iPadOS also make your iPad more productive .

With iOS 13, Apple is opposed to Google's Android 10 to become the most powerful, private, and easy-to-use operating system. Sounds dramatic, but with Android on about 90% of the world's phones, Apple has to give up work to preserve its status and reputation.

Faster Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Choice

For years, we've thought it useful to be able to connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices through the Control Center instead of having to do so. Open App Settings and tap several times.

With iOS 13, Apple has finally made it possible to display available networks or devices and connect without ever opening the settings. Hallelujah. For us this fixes one of the most annoying quirks of the iPhone.

QuickPath on iOS 13 does not have to be exact.

Jason Cipriani / CNET

This typing keyboard

For years, Android users wiped their keyboard with a number of third-party apps such as Swype and SwiftKey to type. Apple has finally added the feature that lets you trace a word to phrase it.

Apple calls it QuickPath Typing. Theoretically, it's faster than picking on the virtual keyboard and just as accurate – and you still get spelling suggestions as you continue.

This feature is especially useful for one-handed writing and can be used once you have iOS 13 installed. How to Use QuickPath on iOS 13 . And we have found a workaround with which you can work on the iPhone keyboard .

Dark Mode for All

Dark Mode Replacing the usual bright screen with a dark screen is available for all core apps in iOS 13, including Calendar, Music, and Photo Apps.

This seems to be system-wide, but we have to see if there are exceptions. Dark Mode is a popular trend for all apps and will also apply to Android Q . Here is everything we know about the dark mode for the iPhone .

Deleting Apps Is a Little Different

After Apple completely abolished 3D Touch on the iPhone 11, the way we delete apps on the home screen of our iPhones and iPads and move, changed.

Photos app adds video editing tools

The photos app has been completely redesigned. Organizing and editing photos is now easier and the editing tools have a new look. Most impressive, however, is the ability to use all known video editing tools in the photo app.

Yes, that means you can apply filters, adjust the brightness, and even crop a video right in the photo app. This is what you need to know about photos in iOS 13 .

On iOS 13 and iPadOS, you can control your phone or tablet with a mouse.

iPadOS gestures

The iPad is evolving into a proprietary computing platform that brings together many new gestures for moving apps and the homescreen. Whether you're opening multiple apps or switching quickly between workspaces we've made you familiar with iPad gestures .

Hidden Functions

One of the best things about using new software is finding features that have not yet been announced. Often, these features are most notable in a larger update, and iOS 13 has a fair share of hidden functions .

Of course, it may take some time for hidden features to be detected. Therefore, our current list of hidden features to highlight is 11. If we discover more, this list will certainly grow.

The volume meter gets out of the way

Do you know how iOS has always had an annoying volume meter that overlays the screen and interfered with what you were watching? Well, it's gone on iOS 13. The volume indicator is minimal and goes out of the way – there is even a cool new trick to adjust the volume .

Custom Fonts in Apps

Apple continues to restrict the selection of fonts for iOS as a whole. However, the company is opening iOS 13 to allow custom fonts in apps.

The added flexibility may be an indicator that Apple loses control of all aspects of the user experience. We have not had a chance to look at it yet, but rest assured, when Apple starts publishing new fonts in the App Store, we'll have it all behind us. This is all we know about Installing, Managing and Downloading Custom iPhone Fonts .

Find My Phone and Find My Friends join forces

Apple has combined Find My Friends and Find My iPhone into a single app, now called Find My . In addition to the combination of apps, Apple added the feature of finding lost devices for people you do not even know.

If you mark one of your Apple devices as lost, Apple will overcrow the location of the device, prompting all Apple devices to look for your device's Bluetooth signal. As soon as another Apple device finds your lost phone, tablet or computer, you will receive a warning message. According to Apple, the free service is completely anonymous and encrypted.

Sign in to Apple Does Not Forward Your Email Address

A new privacy feature called Logging In to Apple logs you into accounts and apps without needing to add your email address, like Apple does says protects users from third-party apps they want to track.

This is the Apple version for logging in to Facebook and Google, with one big exception. These tools can be used to track you online, but the Apple version uses your iPhone or iPad to authenticate your credentials when you log in. They tap to authenticate with Face ID without revealing personal information about themselves.

You can also share or hide your e-mail address and ask Apple to create a random e-mail address for the app or service that will be redirected to your actual e-mail address. This will mask your actual identity without you having to use a junk account.

Apple is also blocking apps that track your location over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and lets you decide whether apps should ask for your permission every time you query your location data.

Sarah Tew / CNET

Memoji avatars come to news, stickers

iMessages now works on dual-SIM phones as well (we do not have more details).

The News Search Is Much Smarter

With iOS 13, the ability to browse old news conversations has been greatly improved. You can now find links, photos, attachments, and even text in a multi-month news thread.

Memories have a new look

Memories look completely new and it's so much smarter. You can even set it to remind you of something in the next conversation with a contact in messages.

Apple Maps Enhancements

There is now a Google Street View-like feature called "Look Around" and a new feature that allows you to share your ETA with a loved one Never feel bad again, unexpectedly late.

Share music or a movie with a second AirPod pair.

Instead of giving one of your AirPods to a friend or loved one so they can hear what you're listening to, you can now tell your iPhone to stream audio to two AirPod pairs thanks to audio sharing. If you've bought something with Apple Pay, you're already a pro in setting up Audio Share (19459005).

Siri finds a new voice

Apple's voice assistant Siri receives an audio update in iOS 13 . Instead of the cut-off tones that are often associated with AI, Apple hopes that the new Siri sounds gentler and more natural in your ears. Through a neural speech-speaking network Siri speaks with fewer gaps and less inhuman-sounding modulations.

Siri for iOS 13 also works better with AirPods (144 USD on Amazon) the HomePod (299 USD on Walmart) CarPlay and Safari:
