iPhone features without which you can not live

Big iPhone features like dual-back cameras get all the attention, but it's the little things that matter most.

Josh Miller / CNET

I'm sitting in the Auditorium of the Castro Theater for the San Francisco International Film Festival. The movie Do not Worry, He will not finish walking far, and Gus Van Sant and Danny Elfman, the director and composer of the film, take the stage for an interview. I'm scared.

"Is my iPhone on or is it off? I'm pretty sure I turned it off before the movie, or did I put it in airplane mode, but what if I did not?" [1

The 9 most underrated features of the iPhone

2:42

Every iPhone has a mute switch since Steve Jobs has started the original 2007 . It is not a noticeable feature. There is no line for this on the CNET spec chart. I can not remember the last time it was mentioned in a review . But this mute switch has helped me so many times.

There are many little things on the iPhone that are practical like the mute switch. Here are some of my favorites:

Mute switch

Apple calls it a "ring / silent switch". It's a hardware reminder of a time when our phones were mainly used to make phone calls. But as our iPhone habits have evolved, it's still useful as a last line of defense for all audio alerts except alerts .

Back to the top of a page

If you're on the Internet site in Safari or using an app that scrolls – think of Instagram – you can tap the time at the top of the webpage or app as an abbreviation to return to the top , In Safari, tap once on the web address field and then on the time again.

Flash

If you have a iPhone 8 8 Plus or a iPhone X you have one of the most popular camera features ever made for a phone: Slow Sync Flash . Basically, Apple has actually made the camera usable. Bye, bye, red eyes, and you did not look like you were caught in a spotlight when your photo was taken.

The iPhone captures the photo at a slower shutter speed while firing the flash quickly. When the shutter is opened longer, the background becomes more exposed, making it brighter. The results are impressive:

These recordings were taken in a bar. The left is from the 7 Plus with the flash, and the right is the 8 Plus with Slow Sync Flash.

AirDrop

If you need to share photos, videos, or files with other Apple devices, AirDrop is the way to go. It is incredibly easy. You simply tap the Share button and a series of possible devices until AirDrop appears. Then you tap on the symbol of a friend and as soon as he has accepted, the file or photo will be sent.

When AirDrop was first introduced, at best it seemed to work intermittently at best. But five years later, AirDrop is the most important way to transfer things between devices. See this item for a Refresh on AirDrop .

iPhone SE

The smallest and cheapest Apple phone you can buy is the iPhone SE . It has the body of the iPhone 5 / 5S but the internals and camera from the iPhone 6S . It's almost impossible to find a new phone that's really small and good. Oh, and it still has a headphone jack.

There are rumors that Apple will update the small phone with a iPhone SE 2 . But nothing was officially announced.

Share Your Wi-Fi Password

One of the many special features of iOS 11 is when you join a new Wi-Fi network and "Share your WiFi" – Request Appears iOS Device Of A Friend Or Mac Ask for permission for the password. Once they have it OK, the gadgets will do the rest. (I should note that the other person must be a contact in your address book.) This feature made the impossible possible: it's fun to share a Wi-Fi password and To protect your privacy – the actual password is never displayed.

Accessibility

When Apple released the behemoth iPhone 6 Plus it added accessibility – a software feature that made it one-handed usable . It works fine enough on all iPhones since, aside from the iPhone SE.

Double-tap the Home button and the content on the screen is lowered by one-third so that it can be reached with one thumb. This gesture is a second nature to me. There is a setting on the accessibility menu on the iPhone X to turn it on.

iOS 11 brought the iPhone camera a handy level for all top-down shots.

Perfect Flat Photos

With the release of iOS 11, a pair of crosshairs – one white and one yellow – appear when you take photos from top to bottom. You maneuver the iPhone lightly until the crosshairs turn discolored and yellow, indicating that your phone is on par with your subject – think of food photography.

I feel like Wes Anderson knows that my avocado toast photo is perfect framed and level.

Live Photos

When live photos came out, I was not keen on it and switched it off . A live photo consists of a photo and a 3-second video taken 1.5 seconds before and after shooting. Last year I activated Live Photos again and I am glad that I did it. It captures truly amazing moments that sometimes a single photo can miss.

Once I played Super Mario Odyssey on my Nintendo Switch and my cat Stella decided to sit out the TV. I paused the game and took a picture with my iPhone 7 . By the way, the break screen of the game became a wonderful juxtaposition of Stella – an ideal moment for live photos. Look at it:

I took a picture and got this great live picture.

iPhone Trackpad

The standard iOS keyboard on every 3D Touch iPhone features a hidden trackpad. To activate it, press firmly on any key until you see that the keys are empty and feel a haptic knock. The keyboard basically becomes a trackpad, and when you move your finger across the keyboard, the cursor follows the screen.

iOS 12

At WWDC 2018, Apple announced iOS 12, which will be released this fall. It adds features such as Memoji group FaceTime and improvements to Siri among others. Read our story on iOS 12 for a Closer Look at iOS 12 .
