In his short letter of resignation, James Murdoch said he was leaving the company over “disagreements about certain editorial content published by the news agencies” and “certain other strategic decisions”.
A spokesman for James Murdoch said that there would be no immediate further comment and that the letter spoke for itself.
In a joint statement, Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch said: “We thank James for his many years of service for the company. We wish him all the best for his future efforts.”
James Murdoch, whose older brother Lachlan Murdoch is the head of Fox Corporation, had already left part of the media empire because of his disgust at Fox News. The younger Murdoch also previously expressed his rejection of his father̵
But he had stayed on the board of News Corp – something that had fascinated family friends. His departure from News Corp on Friday reflects the growing distance he has created between his brother and father’s media stores.
Although he is no longer a member of the board of directors of the family businesses, he is still connected to the empire through the Murdoch Family Trust, which holds important voting rights in both companies.
News Corp. covers newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. This also includes the HarperCollins book publisher.
News Corp also owns a large chunk of the Australian media, which was criticized earlier this year for reporting on climate change related to recent forest fires across the country.
A spokesman for James Murdoch said in January that he and his wife Kathryn Murdoch had “well-established” views on climate change and were “particularly disappointed with the continued rejection among Australian news agencies in the face of obvious evidence to the contrary”.
