A suspect was reportedly in custody Saturday night after a Los Angeles police officer was injured in the head in an attack at the department’s port station in San Pedro.
The officer was hospitalized and was supposed to survive, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore tweeted.
“The officer involved in this incident has been taken to a local hospital and is receiving medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries,” the LAPD wrote on Twitter. “The suspect involved in this incident is in custody. This is preliminary information as this is an active and ongoing investigation.”
Moore said the officer suffered “bumps and bruises”
“He’s resting and will be fine … port units responding to suspects being pursued and taking him into custody,” Moore wrote on Twitter.
Moore told reporters the suspect, a man around 29, went into the lobby of the station and the officer went out to speak to him.
“It escalated into some sort of argument. During this argument, at this very early stage, it appears that the officer’s weapon was taken from him and the person fired shots at the officer,” he said at a press conference outside the hospital early Sunday morning in which the officer was treated.
The duty officer in charge saw the suspect hit the officer on the ward and grab the officer’s gun, Deputy Police Chief Horace Frank told the Los Angeles Times. He said the guard commander shot the suspect, who ran away and drove away.
Earlier reports said the officer was shot in the head.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m., reported KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

“I send my best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to our @LAPDHQ officer who was injured in an incident at Harbor Station tonight,” tweeted Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti early Sunday. “The officer is in stable condition and we are closely monitoring the situation.”
In another incident early Saturday morning, a suspect driving a black SUV shot an off-duty LAPD officer in Reseda, about 40 miles north of San Pedro. The suspect missed the police officer, but hit his car, reported KNBC-TV.

Saturday’s incidents came exactly two weeks after two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s MPs were shot in the head in an “ambush” attack in a patrol car near a Compton subway station. Both MPs underwent surgery and are recovering at home after being released from hospital.
