Lisa Montgomery, Brandon Bernard: US plans to execute first woman since 1953

Lisa Montgomery is expected to receive a lethal injection on Dec. 8, the Justice Department says. In 2004, she was convicted of strangling a Missouri woman who was eight months pregnant. Then she was cut out and kidnapped.

The last woman to be executed by the US government was Bonnie Brown Heady on December 18, 1953, for kidnapping and murder, according to the US Bureau of Prisons.

Also in 1953, Ethel Rosenberg was executed along with her husband Julius for espionage.

Montgomery’s execution will be the Justice Department’s eighth this year after a hiatus of 17 hearings.

The ninth execution will be Brandon Bernard, convicted in 1999 of the murder of two youth ministers on a Texas military reservation. He is due to be executed by lethal injection on December 10th.

Bernard’s co-defendant, Christopher Vialva, was executed on September 22nd.

Both Montgomery and Bernard are being held in Federal Prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Prior to that year, the federal government had not executed anyone since 2003, and only four people since 1960, according to Bureau of Prisons records.
