If you can not wait to hold Apple's new Mac OS in your hands, you can download and install Catalina here.
Check if you can run Catalina
First, check to see if you can install the new OS before you get started. The hardware requirements of Catalina remain the same as for MacOS Mojave, the current version of the operating system. So if you can do Mojave, you can do Catalina. The following Macs meet the requirements:
To check which Mac you have, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. The Overview tab shows which Mac you have.
Before You Install Catalina …
Before you download and install the MacOS update, make sure that switching to Catalina is as smooth as possible.
Make a backup copy. Before you download and install a large MacOS update, you should make a good, up-to-date backup copy of the contents of your Mac drive if something goes south during installation or afterward and you need to go back. You can use either thebackup utility built into your Mac or a Mac backup app such as Carbon Copy Cloner
. Know your Apple ID. If you're a Mac user, you probably have an Apple ID. If not, get one as you will most likely need it during the installation process of Catalina and logging in to iCloud.
Check your free space. The download is large – about 6.5GB – and Apple said you probably should have over 20GB of free space to install Catalina.
Update your apps. With Catalina, Apple disables support for 32-bit apps. If you have an older app that you are still using, such as For example, Microsoft Office 11 for Mac, check ifbefore switching to Catalina. Otherwise, you will either have to find a replacement or stick to your current MacOS so you can continue to use the software.
Ready? Download and install
After completing your preparations, you can download and install Catalina.
1. Go to the Mac App Store and tap Updates in the left sidebar. If Catalina is available, the new operating system should be listed. You can also search for "Catalina" in the shop if you do not see it. If that does not work, choose "About This Mac" from the Apple menu and tap "Software Update" to see if it appears. If you still do not see it, Apple may do a staggered update. So be patient while it comes out.
2. Tap the Update or Get button to download the update.
3. Go through the installation instructions to complete the installation.
