Despite the cancellation of the Mobile World Congress and several high-profile companies withdrawing from the upcoming game developer conference, Magic Leap is pushing ahead with the organization of its own developer conference.
Instead of organizing a large public conference as usual With the LEAP conference in 2018, Magic Leap will instead receive developer attendees at its headquarters in Plantation, Florida, for two events scheduled for May 19-20, and May 21 are planned until May 22nd.
The company's Developer Relations team invites 400 developers to attend the events. Parties interested in participating must request an exam using a web form that will be distributed via email. There, applicants can select their preferred dates for participation.
Magic Leap promises to inform applicants within 30 days whether there is room for them. The events are free, but selected participants must pay their own travel expenses.
"This is the first time that we have an event of this size at our Florida headquarters, and there are many surprises." "The team said in the email invitation.
The conference itinerary includes a day of technical discussions followed by a day of hands-on workshops, including guidance from available senior engineers and designers, and access to new ones Apps and Developer Features. Conferences included technical best practices from Magic Leap Studios teams, success stories from other developers, and monetization of apps. Participants also have the opportunity to connect with others in the community.
In contrast, the first LEAP Con from Magic Leap was announced at the end of August 2018 and took place in Los Angeles from October 9th to 10th. When participants receive a confirmation of acceptance by March 24th, they have more time to prepare for the trip to be found as LEAP Con.
In addition, Magic Leap waives the cost of renting a Vera Room in which the event is held in their own facilities also limits its capacity compared to a conference center that can accommodate hundreds if not thousands of participants. Splitting attendees into two separate events doubles the company's capacity, but is unlikely to achieve the scale and spectacle it has achieved with LEAP Con.
But there is an elephant in the room in the form of the outbreak of the corona virus which has forced large technology companies to cut their travel plans to protect employees and cut production. Despite the widespread health concerns that the tech industry is currently facing at personal conferences and meetings, Magic Leap invites developers to its home base.
It is unclear whether the outbreak will be contained at Magic Leap's event until May begins, but a disclaimer in the event application releases Magic Leap from "direct or indirect loss, damage, or injury" from the events, including all costs associated with the postponed or canceled events.
So, while the conference is free, attendees should make sure they are insured for flight and hotel reservation refunds just in case.
