Magic Leaps Computer Acquisition Strengthens Mesh Computing Capabilities through Crowdsourcing Processing Capacity «Magic Leap :: Next Reality



Magic Leap's recent business move could significantly improve the performance and headset design of its spatial computing platform.

On Friday, Magic Leap announced the acquisition of Computes, Inc., which will create a decentralized and distributed mesh computing platform. The founders of the company, Chris Matthieu and Jade Meskill, are now Senior Director of Computing Services and Principal Software Engineer, respectively. Next Reality contacted Magic Leap to confirm the total number of employees involved and the purchase price of the acquisition, but these details were not disclosed at the time of writing.

Using a Blockchain-based Peer-to-Peer Network, Computes Leverage unused compute capacity from unused computers around the world and use the computing power to perform the heavy lifting required for mesh computing.

"With over 27 billion connected devices in the world today (and growing), the Compute platform provides us with the building blocks needed to make spatial computing accessible to anyone," said Gus Pinto, vice president of product and engineering at Magic Leap, in a statement. "With so many private beta users already using Computes, we want to gain valuable feedback and build a portfolio of services for developers, developers, businesses, and end users to harness the power of Spatial Computing on any platform."

Microsoft has enabled similar features in HoloLens that can now be wirelessly linked to a PC for complex rendering tasks. However, Compute takes this concept and multiplies it exponentially with billions of computers.

"I think the beauty of it is AI computing everywhere, especially marginally, where the AI ​​should count on where the data source is or where sensors are generating the data, rather than streaming everything into the cloud," Matthieu said in a statement Video Computes released in March (embedded below). "Any machine anywhere in the world can connect, communicate, and compute to perform artificial intelligence calculations at the source, wherever that may be, in real time, no latency."

Moving processing to remote computers could allow future Magic Leap devices to run more complex mesh computing applications, significantly increasing processing capacity on the device. This in turn could lead to a leaner form factor for Magic Leap headsets targeting the consumer market in the future.
