Make the volume keys control ringtones and notifications back in Android Pie «Android :: Gadget Hacks

As a longtime Android user, one of the changes I liked most about Android Pie was the fact that the volume rocker controls the volume of media by default. However, the new route is not ideal for everyone, but fortunately there is an app that can reset it.

This solution allows you to return to the previous Android implementation, where the default action of the volume rocker is to turn up the volume of the ringing, except you watch a video or listen to audio (whether music, podcast, etc.). However, what makes this solution even better is that it keeps the media controls nearby. So while your volume rocker controls the ringtone, you're just a touch away from the media control setting.

Step 1
: Download Button Mapper

To change the default volume control, you first need the buttons. To achieve this we have found an app called Button Mapper by flar2, AKA Aaron Segaert from ElementalX. Button Mapper does not need root, it works with Android 9.0 Pie, it's free, and it's pretty easy to use. You can find the app in the Play Store using the following link:

Step 2: Enable the Mapper button

When you first open the Mapper button You must enable the Accessibility Service so that the app can detect when a button is activated. A banner at the bottom appears with the button "Go", which brings you to the right page. In the Accessibility Service menu, select "Button Mapper" and activate the toggle. Once activated, you will return to the Map Mapper main page to begin reassigning your buttons.

Step 3: Re-adjust the volume controls

Select "Volume Up," then enable the "Customize" toggle to access the rest of the options , Select "Single Tip" and select Volume + from the list. Go back to the main page and select "Volume Down". Activate the "Customize" button and select "Easy typing". Select Volume from the list.

Step 4: Issue Button Mapper DND Permission

While this is not necessary to control the volume, we recommend that you give the app the Do Not Disturb feature. Once this feature is enabled, you can quickly activate the DND mode by pressing the volume button when the volume is set to zero. To do this, long press the volume down key until a toast message appears next to a new page. On this new page, you can specify that apps manage Do Not Disturb. Activate the button next to Button Mapper.

Step 5: Testing Your New Buttons

After your buttons have been reconfigured, it's time to try them out. Press either the volume up or volume down button and see the new volume controls. Instead of the single Media Control slider, you now see an additional ringer control slider, which the buttons now control by default. The dual slider lets you control media volume by moving the controls up and down with the touchscreen.

(1) Before, (2) After

As with most Android components The choice. With such a robust collection of apps in the Play Store, software changes are more common so you can customize the experience to your liking. With Button Mapper, whether you're a fan of Pie's standard action or not, you have the option to customize it to your favorite style.
