Microsoft applies for another patent to increase the field of view in AR displays «HoloLens :: Next Reality



Based on continued research, Microsoft appears to recognize that the next HoloLens will require a wider field of view (FoV). Based on recently published documentation, the company's research team has found another way to achieve this goal.

A patent application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on Jun. 21, 2016, published June 21, describes a method of enlarging FoV on a near-eye display using a microelectromechanical (MEMS) laser scanner

How current augmented reality headsets work with liquid A MEMS laser scanner projects images by reflecting light onto grids on a display.

While the FoV of a MEMS laser scanner is typically only 35 degrees, Microsoft's patent application requires that the display produce light in two different directions, with the projected images possibly overlapping in the middle. As a result, the field of view according to the Patent Abstract could reach 70 degrees.

Last year, Microsoft filed a similar patent for doubling FoV by projecting stereo images.

Since the last patent was filed more than 18 months ago, it is conceivable that Microsoft had enough time to implement the system for the next generation of HoloLens. On the other hand, the mere existence of a patent does not guarantee its implementation in any form.

A supplier of MEMS laser scanner displays, MicroVision, announced last April that it has received a $ 24 million development order from a major technology company manufacturing such a display system

"We believe That the LBS display markets have tremendous growth opportunities, and we are very pleased that a large technology company has decided to work with MicroVision and our PicoP scanning technology to develop its product, "said Alexander Tokman, President and CEO of MicroVision. "We believe that our systems expertise and the ability of our patented LBS technology to produce a display that produces high-resolution images from a low-power, small form factor engine have been instrumental in winning this business."

Lower power consumption and smaller footprint match what is expected of the next HoloLens. Time will tell if this method will cause Microsoft to disrupt the capabilities of its headset.
