Last week, Microsoft announced it would move Edge from the EdgeHTML engine to Chromium. In a weekend reddit thread, the company answered a few questions about what this will mean for the future of the browser.
First, Edge will support Chrome extensions after the transition. That's pretty big, because the Chrome Store has some great enhancements that will take Edge to the next level.
One of the bigger questions was what would this mean for current PWAs found in the Microsoft Store, as they are being completely migrated to Chromium within the operating system, most of this functionality would be compromised. It was made clear that it is not intended to give up EdgeHTML completely in the operating system ̵
In addition, Microsoft plans to install PWAs directly from the Chromium version of Edge, as is already possible with Chrome, and also from the Microsoft Store.
Basically, that just means that the features you're already using – especially PWAs – will not go anywhere, and Edge will only get better and more useful.
