With all the talk about the upcoming release of the Magic Leap One, some have forgotten about a very important competing release on the near horizon: HoloLens 2.0. Well, now we have new information that tells us when (in about) the device will be released, as well as a few other exciting tidbits.
Codename Sydney within Microsoft, the device will be cheaper than the original (which costs $ 3,000), according to a new report by Thurrott be lighter and more comfortable to wear. Citing documents apparently revealing some of the key details about the next-generation HoloLens, the report also claims that the device's report claims the new version of the HoloLens will also contain "significantly improved holographic displays." ,
Interestingly, the cited documents regarding Microsoft's priorities also describe the augmented reality and the VR space as "a must-win market." A few years ago such an idea might have been laughed at by many Microsoft observers, but given the hype surrounding the Magic Leap One, which will be released this year, HoloLens is potentially facing fierce competition in a room in recent years the path groundbreaking.
Add to this the fact that many new players are hot on the heels of HoloLens with cheaper, less immersive options, and it becomes clear that the HoloLens are in to be competitive
Earlier reports this year revealed the codename of Sydney and some of the visual enhancements, but this new report sets the release date to a more specific timeframe and supports all information with the added mention of documents that back up the details.
Hopefully, the biggest obstacle to holoLens for most users – the price – will actually be in line with the claims made in this latest unconfirmed report. In the meantime, Microsoft will have plenty of time to observe the response to the Magic Leap One 2018 and adjust its own product accordingly.
