NASA asks students to name the next Mars rover



The next NASA rover is due to land on Mars in February 2021, but one important component is still missing: a name. To arouse interest in the mission and to inspire students to join in the STEM topics that enable space exploration, NASA is sponsoring a contest called Name the Rover. Open to K-12 students at US public, private and home schools. In this essay contest, students are asked to name the robot astronaut and to explain the reasons for their designation.

If you are a student In your household or in your class (if you are a teacher) you want to try it, it is very simple. Just go to the Name the Rover Challenge page and click on the "Student and Teacher Signup" button. Entries will be judged on the meaning and originality of the selected name and essay.

  • One entry per student.
  • The name may not be a repetition of a past space mission or a NASA flight program. [19659009] If you want to use the name of a real person, you must be dead.
  • No company or brand names, and of course the essay must be completely original.
  • The submission deadline is November 1st and the final entries will be posted on the website in January 2020 for a public poll.
