City council candidate Heshy Tischler was arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the attack by an Orthodox journalist in Borough Park last week, police said.
Carpenter, who is also Orthodox, has been detained at his home in Borough Park and has been charged with illegal detention and rioting, police said.
Videos posted on social media show Carpenter being escorted into a dark minivan by police while dozens of people watch.
Carpenter announced last Friday that he would go police on Monday morning after appearing to attack an unruly crowd of protesters who attacked Jacob Kornbluh, a reporter for Jewish Insiders.
The fire complained on camera at the time of his arrest on Sunday evening, saying he had been “betrayed”
“I called, I even spoke to the boss. You set me up. They tell everyone that I should be arrested tomorrow, ”Carpenter said in a video that Yaakov Pollak posted on Twitter.
The bust comes after Mayor de Blasio said Friday that an arrest in Kornbluh’s beating was imminent.
Kornbluh was hit and kicked last Wednesday by an angry crowd who yelled at him and called him “Nazi” and “Hitler” amid protests against the state’s new coronavirus restrictions.
Some of the protesters were upset that Kornbluh was documenting the protests in Borough Park.
Carpenter’s lawyer Sara Shulevitz said on Sunday evening that her client had been the victim of a “politically motivated arrest”.
“He’s not guilty and this is a politically motivated arrest and the truth will come out,” Shulevitz told the Post at Brooklyn Criminal Court on Tischler’s indictment.

Soya Radin, the co-host of Tischler’s radio show “The Just Enough Heshy Show,” claimed de Blasio was behind the bust.
“Carpenter had nothing to do with hitting someone. Pure de Blasio, ”said Radin in the courthouse.
