The WaterField Tech Rolltop offers tremendous capacity but little value or organization.
WaterField

The basic backpack offers almost unlimited variations. However, the rolltop is a popular option if you need maximum storage space. But what if you want a designer label with your utility? WaterFields Tech Rolltop hopes you'll take a look.

Here's what we like

  • Huge carrying capacity
  • High quality waxed canvas

And what we do not

  • Very heavy
  • Very expensive
  • Not very easy to organize

That have I did when the company sent me the larger version of the bag. Unfortunately, the enormous storage capacity is literally burdened by a heavy build that does not offer much flexibility as a compromise. There are no reasons for the taste, but I can not say that I was in love with the restrained look. Combine this with a very high price and it just does not make a compelling offer as a premium bag.

Stick It All

The essence of a roll top bag is the fact that the top rolls up. The idea is that it will be able to hold an amazing amount of material when needed and become more compact if it is not. In both respects the Tech Rolltop is sufficient.

WaterField makes the magnetic closure that secures the rolltop an important focus of its marketing. And it's a nice mechanism to be sure: you can easily pull the clasp out with one hand and the two points just have to approach each other so they snap back in through the sliding magnet design. But the whole thing is not much easier than a standard closure, which is found in many backpacks. So I think it's not as convincing as the magnetic closure on the Peak Design bags.

There are only two inner pockets in the large main pocket, one with zipper and one flat and lined with super-soft material for a tablet. The rest of the room is designed to store as many loose items as possible. And it's a lot: at maximum volume, the bag holds 15 liters. That should be enough for a long weekend and toiletries as well as a laptop in the padded zipped compartment.

Organization missing

Unfortunately, you have to organize a lot on this trip. Apart from the laptop bag and two water bottle bags on both sides, there are only two pockets in the bag. The lower front pocket has a standard zipper and an inner key fob. The upper pocket holds with a magnet closed, so you can quickly reach for phones, passports or batteries.

But that's pretty much all in terms of organization. If you want to carry pens, cables, SD cards, or other trivial things, you will either have to leave them in one of the larger pockets or provide your own organizer. The same goes for mid-size items that need more protection, such as a camera or portable game console. There are bags that are just as big as these and offer more order and a cheaper price.

Good Materials to Rock You

The Tech Rolltop uses a super-heavy waxed 14-ounce canvas. It's tough enough to ward off bumps and blows from anything but a knife or a car accident, and water should bead off like a duck's back. It also looks pretty harsh in the brown version that came with our review sample. If you like something that looks a bit like camping or military equipment, it's enough.

Unfortunately, this heavy canvas material is heavy. The bag weighs more than three pounds (and that's the bigger version). If it does not sound like much, remember that it is explicitly designed to carry a large amount of things, at least temporarily. As someone who suffers from back pain, I would prefer a cheap, light duffel bag for a weekend getaway or a night flight.

The straps and padded back are quite comfortable, and the black version (the ballistic nylon instead of canvas There are many sturdy, good-looking bags that are not heavy and will not complain on long hikes or in bad weather, combined with their maximum carrying capacity is one of the biggest advantages the bag contradicts the material.

Value is not a on the table

How much would you pay for the Tech Rolltop? When I asked locals in my town, at the bar and on the trail, most of them responded with $ 70 or $ 80. They answered in disbelief when I told them that it was $ 250 ($ 230 for the more compact version). Even as someone who is not strangers to the three-digit price tags for beautiful bags, I can not say that I accuse them.

The materials of the Tech Rolltop are excellent, and the magnetic closure on the safety strap and the front quick access pocket are interesting. But between the bad organization options, the heavy execution and the high price, it is simply not a great product when everything comes together. I can not recommend it.
