Pelosi’s office confirms interior hair appointment in breach of San Francisco Covid-19 restrictions

Confirmation came after Fox News reported that the salon’s owner, Erica Kious, was angry that Pelosi broke the rules that require such hair treatments to be done outdoors because of the pandemic. Fox also reported being given security footage showing the speaker in eSalon not wearing a mask.

Pelosi’s staff insisted that Pelosi wear a mask while she had her hair styled, except for a brief period of time when she had her hair washed. The security footage shows Pelosi not wearing a mask while briefly walking back and forth between two small rooms in the salon. Your hair is wet as if washed.

“The spokesman always wears a mask and complies with local Covid requirements,”

; said Drew Hammill, Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, in the statement.

However, Hammill’s comments confirmed that Pelosi and her staff had relied on someone in the salon to interpret what the new city rules allowed – which only came into effect Friday – and that the person was wrong.

“This shop offered the speaker to enter on Monday, telling her that the city could have one customer in the shop at a time,” said Hammill. “The spokeswoman followed the rules presented to her by this facility.”

Pelosi’s staff said the spokeswoman has a regular stylist who usually goes to Pelosi to do her hair. Unavailable on Monday, this person referred Pelosi’s staff to a stylist at eSalon as Pelosi’s regular stylist used to work there.

CNN reached out to Kious and eSalon by phone and email but received no immediate response.

Kious told Fox News that stylists in her salon are independent and rent chairs, and that it was one of her independent stylists who told Kious that she planned to do Pelosi’s hair on Monday.

“I thought, are you kidding me now? Am I going to let you do that? What do I do?” Kious told Fox News while noting that she “can’t control” what her stylists are doing when they rent chairs from her because “they’re not currently paying”.

Kious described Pelosi’s visit as “a slap in the face that she went in, you know that she feels like she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in and I can’t work.”

The new restrictions in San Francisco state that hair salons can operate outdoors, although certain procedures like shampooing, dyeing, and chemical treatments are still banned.
San Francisco eSalon is not affiliated with eSalon’s custom hair coloring service for the home.

Covids casing and restriction of hair salons and barber shops became politicized during the year. In May, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz had his hair cut at a Texas salon whose owner was jailed for defying state orders to stay home and reopen early. President Donald Trump, who has consistently pushed for businesses to reopen during the pandemic, also tweeted his support for the Texas salon owner.

Trump retweeted Fox News’ story about Pelosi less than a week after giving his Republican National Convention speech on the White House lawn with no social distancing and with very few masks.

On Capitol Hill, in response to Covid-19, Pelosi has tightened legislative restrictions and required masks on the floor of the house and in the corridors of the Capitol. And she instructed all committee chairs to also require masks to be worn at committee meetings when attendees weren’t speaking, and she pushed for rules that allow proxy voting so lawmakers who couldn’t travel amid the pandemic could get someone in could choose their name.

Pelosi was also the Democrats’ negotiator for another round of funding for the coronavirus response. These efforts have largely stalled as Democrats and Republicans continue to be far apart on spending numbers.

This story has been updated to take into account that the hair salon where house spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi got her hair done is not affiliated with the home color service of the same name.

CNN’s Manu Raju and Dan Simon contributed to this report.
