“Vice President Pence remains in good health and wishes the Trumps all the best in their recovery,” said Devin O’Malley, vice president’s spokesman, in a tweet. “As has been the practice for months, Vice President Pence is being tested for COVID-19 every day.”
The vice president comes first in the presidency, followed by the House Speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and Pro Tempore Senate President, Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley.
Trump’s diagnosis a month before the November 3rd elections has massive implications for the immediate future of the election campaign, the government and the economy.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is fourth in line, said Friday that he tested negative. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, fifth in line, also tested negative, according to a tweet from his spokeswoman.
Pence is expected to attend Wednesday’s Vice Presidential debate with Sen. Kamala Harris, Democrat Joe Biden’s supporter. Trump and Biden appeared together on stage on Tuesday evening some distance away to hold their first presidential debate.
Trump announced in a tweet sent after midnight that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the virus and that they would begin a “quarantine and recovery process” immediately.
Trump’s doctor, Dr. Sean Conley said in a memo shared by White House officials, “The president and first lady are fine right now.”
“Rest assured, I expect the president to continue performing his duties uninterruptedly while he recovers,” Conley said.
On Thursday evening, media reported that Hope Hicks, one of Trump’s top advisors, had tested positive. Hicks had tested positive Thursday morning after showing symptoms on Wednesday night, NBC News reported. She was reportedly quarantined at Air Force One late Wednesday when the president flew back to Washington from a campaign rally in Minnesota.
Trump himself confirmed Hicks ‘diagnosis in a Thursday night interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.
“She’s a hard worker, a lot of masks, she wears a lot of masks. She tested positive. I just took the test, we’ll see,” said Trump. “We spend a lot of time, the first lady has just done a test. We don’t know whether we are in quarantine or whether we have.”
Trump is the most powerful figure to deal with Covid-19. Before that, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had tested positive for coronavirus and survived, as did Britain’s Prince Charles.
