Printers are known to fail frequently. A quick restart of the printer or computer usually fixes most of the temporary issues. Occasionally, however, it is recommended to reset the print settings and completely reinstall the printer. Think of this as the last step in troubleshooting. It is best to try other options first. See our troubleshooting guide for printing issues on macOS for other possible solutions.
Resetting the Printing System
In Spotlight, search for "Printers" or open the "Printer & Scanner" settings in System Preferences. 1
Selecting this command deletes all current settings and removes all printers from the list (not exactly what you right-clicked). To avoid accidentally doing this, you must enter your password.
Because all printers are removed from the settings, you must manually add them back. Make sure your printer is connected and click the "+" button at the bottom of the list. You can view the connected printers or add a wireless printer over the network.
There are some printers that you can not add in this dialog box. If you have problems reinstalling a printer, consult your printer's manual or search for an installer for your printer model online.
