With no end in sight to the COVID-1
Regal vacillates from two problems: audiences hesitating to return to an indoor hangout, and movie studios holding back on blockbuster releases until they can bet on nine-digit paydays. While many films slated for theatrical releases since February have been released on streaming platforms, others have been delayed time and again. With Black widow 2020 will be the first year in more than a decade without a new Marvel movie.
The move comes despite a push by Regal for “CinemaSafe” theaters, compliance with CDC guidelines for indoor gatherings, and compliance with state and local emergency regulations. Regal says the closure will affect 536 locations and approximately 40,000 employees, but has not worked out any steps that would be taken to assist it. With no revenue, the permanent closure of at least some bookshelf theaters seems inevitable.
