The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra offer everything we would expect from its flagship series. High-end specs and features, gorgeous displays, fantastic cameras, and an even better S-Pen make it one of the best smartphones you can get in 2020. Unfortunately, nothing is perfect, and the latest from Samsung have their fair share of problems too. Here is a summary of some common problems with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and how to fix them!

Editor’s note: Not every Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will encounter these issues. In fact, you probably won’t meet any of them.


Problem # 1: Problem with the green tint

The OLED lottery strikes again. Most flagships these days come with OLED screens, and a handful of them will inevitably have an issue with the hue of the display. The Galaxy Note 20 phones have this problem. Owners have complained that the displays on their devices are green.

The problem is usually caused by the brightness of the display decreasing beyond a certain threshold. It is most noticeable when something appears on the screen with a gray background. The problem has been reported by the owners of the Exynos and Snapdragon variants.

There is usually a software fix for this, and hopefully Samsung will roll it out soon. For now, the brightness has to be kept at a higher level. If you find a problem with the display, regardless of the brightness levels and color modes, you can only choose one replacement.


Problem # 2: Edge lighting is not working properly

Some users find that the edge lighting feature does not work properly. The edge of the screen does not light up as expected when a notification arrives even though all settings are enabled.

Potential solutions:

  • First, make sure that the correct settings are enabled. Go to the settings, search for Edge lightingand select Choose Apps. By default, only the Messages app is selected. Go through the list and select the apps you want to receive notifications for.
  • Some users are seeing this problem due to the use of a microSD card from an older device. A folder or directory from the older phone is being transferred and is conflicting with the settings on the new phone. You will need to format the microSD card in order for this to be resolved. However, save everything first.
  • Others see this problem because they disabled animations in the developer options. When you’ve done this, set the animations to at least 0.5 times.
  • Until a software update is available to address this issue, a third-party app can help. Try Edge Lighting + in the Samsung Good Lock Suite or AODNotify which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Problem # 3: Random restarts

Some users have an issue with their phones randomly restarting. In some cases, this only seems to happen when the person is using swipe gestures.

Potential solutions:

  • If swipe gestures are causing the problem, you may need to change each swipe. Samsung has an app that lets you customize and control how swipe gestures work. Download the One Hand Operation Plus app from the Google Play Store to get started.
  • An app can cause this problem. Start the phone in Safe Mode (see instructions on how to do this below) and see if the problem persists. If it doesn’t, then the cause is a rogue app. Uninstall the most recently updated or installed apps and see if the phone works as expected.

Problem # 4: ghost vibrations

Some users see ghost vibrations. The buzz is a brief burst, similar to removing the S-pin. A reboot will only fix the problem for a few hours.

Potential solutions:

  • There are a few settings you can adjust to see if the problem is resolved. Go to Settings> Display> Edge Screen> Edge Panels> Handle Settings and turn off Vibrate when the handle is touched.
  • Go to Settings> Sound and Vibration> System Sound / Vibration Control and turn off touch interactions.
  • A fall could also be causing the problem. Some users find that removing the case will solve the problem.
  • The main culprit, however, could be an issue with the restoration. Performing a factory reset and manually setting up the phone instead of restoring it from a previous account can fix some of the problems that users face with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra.

Issues where the only option is to wait for an update or get a replacement

Reversing cameras

A hardware problem needs to be replaced. However, most of the problems are related to the software. If a workaround isn’t available, an upcoming software update will likely fix it.

  • Camera Failed Error: This is an error that some users encounter every time they open the camera app. A software update can fix this problem. However, it’s likely a hardware problem, and since the camera is unusable, it’s better to get a replacement.
  • Phone does not switch to LTE: The phone automatically switches between 3G, 4G LTE and 5G. However, some users find that the network doesn’t switch automatically, but instead appears to disconnect. Only a restart will fix the problem.
  • Overheating – There have been some reports of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra overheating and this seems to affect the Exynos version in particular.

Instructions – How to do soft reset, hard reset, boot in safe mode and wipe cache partition

With the exception of the hard reset, these are the first troubleshooting steps you need to take when you encounter problems and errors with Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra.

Soft reset

  • If the screen responds:
    • Press and hold the Power key and Volume down key, and then tap Turn off twice.
    • You can also swipe down to open the Notifications panel and tap power Symbol next to the the settings Gear and tap Turn off.
  • If the screen does not respond:
    • Press and hold the Power button and Volume down button for about 10 seconds.

Hard reset

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the volume down button and the power button.
  • Release both buttons when the green Android logo appears.
  • Press the Volume Down button to toggle the selection to Delete data / factory reset.
  • Press the power button to select Delete data / factory reset.
  • Press the Volume Down button to toggle the selection to Yes, delete all user information Frame.
  • Press the power button to select Yes, delete all user information.
  • When the reset is complete, press the power button to select Reboot system now.

Boot into Safe Mode

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the power button behind the Note 20 Name appears on the screen.
  • once Samsung appears, release the power button and immediately press and hold the volume down button.
  • Press and hold the volume down button until the phone restarts.
  • Release the volume button when you see Security mode in the lower left corner of the screen.

Delete cache partition

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the volume down button and the power button.
  • When the Android logo appears, release the volume down button and the power button.
  • You will see one Install system update Message for anywhere between 30 and 60 seconds.
  • In the System Recovery menu options, press the Volume Down button to toggle the selection to Delete cache partition.
  • Press the power button to select Delete cache partition.
  • Press the Volume Down button to toggle the selection to Yes.
  • Press the power button to select Yes.
  • Press the power button to restart the device Reboot system now Option is displayed.
