According to a press release from the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation on Friday, removal of the pier, also known as Waterfront Park, should begin this weekend after it was found to have deteriorated beyond repair.
The two workers were using saw cuts on the pier as part of the dismantling process when it collapsed, said Marshall Foster, director of the Seattle Office of Waterfront and Civic Projects, during a news conference Sunday.
Five of the 12 people on the site were on the pier when an alarm went off indicating a problem, Foster said.
A surveillance system has been in place since the move began last week and, according to Foster, it had deteriorated further as work resumed Friday.
Pier 58 is near several popular Seattle attractions, such as Pike Place Market, the Seattle Great Wheel, and the Aquarium.

The four-ton FitzGerald fountain was also on the pier. Supports were built for this, wells, but they had separated and, according to Foster, had left a heavy, unsupported weight on the pier.
The unsupported weight coupled with the destructive marine environment likely contributed to the deterioration, Foster said.
