SK Telecom launches "Magic Leap" in South Korea and announces partnership between Harry Potter and League of Legends AR "Magic Leap :: Next Reality"

The partnership between Magic Leap and leading South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom gained additional importance earlier this week as the company unveiled the world's first nationwide 5G network.

At an event at the headquarters of SK Telecom in South Korea, Jung -ho Park, the company's CEO, outlined his aggressive entry into 5G, which includes several new augmented reality initiatives.

Initially, SK Telecom will commence with the opening of a series of Magic Leap One demo stations in five of its US flagship stores. The spatial computing demo stations will be located in each store in SK Telecom's "5GX Premium Experience Zone", giving consumers the opportunity to test the device by using Rovio's Angry Birds FPS: First Person Slingshot.

but the relationship between Magic Leap and SK Telecom is rapidly maturing, there is still no information as to when the Magic Leap One can be offered for sale in the SK Telecom stores in South Korea, as in selected AT & T stores. Shops in the US is the case.

In addition to Magic Leap's in-store stations, SK Telecom announced plans to collaborate with Riot Games on the AR version of League of Legends Champions Korea (one of the most-watched esports games in South Korea). The company has also partnered with Niantic to launch the company's mobile AR game Harry Potter.

"SK Telecom will continue to introduce innovative 5G services to lead all areas of [(Information and Communication Technologies)]," said Park. "The AR, VR and Cloud games featured today mark only the beginning of the age of hyperinnovation that brought 5G."

So far, the international footprint of Magic Leap has been sparse, with most of its activities aimed at the public in the US. However, if the company manages to become a popular staple of South Korea, which is the pop culture center of the universe in the growing entertainment market of Asia (and soon ARs), it could help Magic Leap secure its fortune in Asia in the years to come the AR wars are heating up.
