Augmented reality is often likened to granting superpowers to mere mortals, but what about mutated forces?
Based on the new experience of Snapchat Augmented Reality promoting X-Men: Dark Phoenix ]which will hit theaters on June 7, the answer is a definite "yes".
The Augmented Reality experience, which pops up on Snapchat Lens' carousel on Tuesday and is triggered by users raising their hands, simulates the flaming aura and possesses the eyes of the Title character, played by Game of Thrones Alum Sophie Turner, on the front camera.
In rear-view camera, tapping the screen fills the scene with mutant energy and conjures up a ghostly vision of the Dark Phoenix
Once they have admired their new mutated powers (and maybe share the results with others), Snapchat users can buy tickets for the movie online directly through the app The Shoppable AR Platform from Snapchat.
Augmented reality has taken the movie industry by storm, but the technology is particularly well suited to the superhero genre. The Avengers, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Iron Man, Venom, Deadpool, and The Incredibles are some of the properties whose similarities and superpowers have been brought to life by the technology.
Snapchat's Shoppable AR, recently used for the Superhero / Horror Crossover movie Brightburn brings the added benefit of translating the entertainment of the fans into an instant call to action to the coffers to fill the movie studios that sponsor the experiences.
Dark Phoenix is probably the last chapter for the Fox version of these characters, with film rights being reinstated in the Marvel Moloch through Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Snapchat could help make the movie sparkle with box office fireworks until it rises from its ashes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
