Steam does not open? Here's how to fix it

Steam is the most widely used and best-known PC gaming platform in the market. It has massively improved since its release in 2003, but that does not mean that the app itself is sometimes not a bit fussy . When it happens, it's understandably frustrating. So if you get the dreaded problem that the Steam client does not open, we're here to help. Here are the most common causes and solutions:

Note: This article focuses on solutions for Steam on Windows, as the app is mainly used on Windows operating systems. However, Mac users should be aware that operating system updates can often, but only temporarily, damage the game client.

Check if Steam is not working. The most sensible explanation for your problem is either an unstable connection or a temporary failure of Steam. Open your browser and check if websites are loading. If necessary, restart your modem. Yes, we know that this step is a breeze, but you should definitely run it before pouncing on complicated bug fixes.

You can either visit the unofficial Steam Status website or the aptly named Steam Down. Both websites are pretty reliable, and the first one can even give you information about the status of multiplayer game coordinators.

Finally, you should know that Steam is down for routine maintenance every Tuesday between 1pm and 3pm Pacific time. Before you panic, check your calendar.

Check if you can find Steam when switching between tabs -2 monitors. This was the culprit responsible for not having "Steam Open" in several Steam community posts.

So, if you start the Steam client on your Windows PC and it is not visible, just press and hold Alt and Tab. You will see all the programs that are currently open is on the list and look for which screen it is on.

Stop Steam Processes Using the Task Manager

The cache helps you launch applications faster, but sometimes it can "fake" things, causing problems. To fix this, you need to locate the AppCache folder in your Steam directory. If you have the Steam client installed on your C: drive, you will usually find the directory here: C: Program Files (x86) Steam. The AppCache folder should be the topmost folder if your folders are sorted alphabetically.

Copy and paste the App Cache folder into a safe place. Then simply delete the original in the Steam directory. Now all you have to do is start the client. Do not worry, a new AppCache folder will be created automatically. Steam should start without problems.

Uninstall and reinstall Steam.

If none of the previous steps has been successful, it's time to find a more drastic but proven solution. Uninstalling Steam is as easy as going to Control Panel, locating the program, and clicking Uninstall. However, there is a quick reinstall trick that you can use.

Uninstalling is drastic, but there's a way to do that without having to re-download the entire game library.

If you want to save time and money Do not reload every game in your library, here's what you need to do! Go to your Steam installation folder in the program files and delete everything except Steam.exe and the steamapps and userdata folders. Yes, you read that correctly. You should not worry too much. If your PC requests administrator privileges, grant them and continue deleting. Once this is done, just double-click Steam.exe and the app will reinstall.

Make sure you do not run Steam beta client

The beta client is by definition more unstable and can cause problems. If you are currently using it (or have used it in the past) and you suspect that it is the culprit, you can take a step to remedy the problem. Go back to your Steam installation folder and then to the "package" folder. The exact file path for most users is C: Program Files (x86) Steam package. Find the file named beta and just delete it. If that's what causes Steam not to open, you should be ready to use the next time you start the program.

Use System Restore

Windows updates are notorious for damaging things. Steam did not work properly after a Windows update? Then you can rollback using System Restore. None of your files or games will be deleted. Just go to the Control Panel and select Show Big Icons in the upper right corner. Search for recovery and click on it.

Select System Restore and start it. Click Next to search for automatic recovery points and select a date before installing the Windows Update. The process is a bit long, but be patient and let him do his job. It fixes a surprising number of issues, not just those with Steam.

Disable firewalls or antivirus software.

Make sure that a firewall or antivirus software does not block Steam. If this happens, make sure Steam is turned on in exceptional cases, or temporarily turn off the firewall or antivirus program. You should also consider replacing your antivirus software with something less aggressive.

Unclear bug fixes

Did you try everything on this list, but Steam still does not open? Here's an old solution found on the Steam Community Boards that seemed to do the trick for many users. Go to the Steam directory / installation folder as usual. Locate a file named ClientRegistry.blob and rename it ClientRegistryOld.blob. Restart Steam to allow the file to be recreated. Your problem should be solved!

Contact Steam -Support

If you are at the bottom of your rope and nothing seems to fix your problem, it's time to contact Steam Support. Although notorious for relatively slow reactions in the past, this is no longer true for the valve support staff. Use this link to go to Steam Help and sign in to your Steam account. Make sure you have your phone handy if you have Steam Guard enabled. Scroll down and select Steam Client and then Client crashes followed by Contact Support .
