Steve Barnes, founder of the famous Cellino & Barnes law firm, dies in a plane crash

Police responded to an 911 call about a possible crash at 11:46 a.m. on Friday near Pembroke, east of Buffalo, New York, according to Genesee County’s Sheriff William A. Sheron Jr.

“The neighbors described seeing and hearing a plane going east to west,” Sheron said.

“It sounded like a loud wind noise as the plane then flew over a wooded area. [and] fallen from the sky. There was a loud crash and a ball of fire. “

“Then my mom screamed and I ran down the stairs and we looked out our window and there was this big cloud of smoke and we didn’t see the plane go down but we just felt it and saw the smoke.”

The law firm was known for its jingle

Cellino & Barnes has been identified by its commercials and phone numbers.

They were known in much of New York for their catchy slogan “Don’t wait, call 8”, which even inspired a Saturday Night Live sketch.
In 2018, #cellinoandbarneschallenge went viral on Instagram.
But Cellino & Barnes law firm broke up earlier this year and Barnes started his own law firm.

The Barnes Firm made the following statement: “We warmly acknowledge the loss of Steve Barnes and his niece Elizabeth Barnes after a tragic accident. Steve has been a friend, colleague, partner and mentor to so many people in our company, in New York, California and beyond. He was a legal giant, proud Marine, and loving father. Steve and Elizabeth will be sorely missed by many. “

Barnes’ former legal partner Ross Cellino made the following statement:

Steve and I have worked together in our firm for many years. He has always been a fearless attorney to his clients. His death is a significant loss to the legal community. Steve’s greatest achievement were his three children Josiah, Rachel and Julia. Steve survived it from his long-term partner Ellen Sturm, also a lawyer in our law firm.

“Equally heartbreaking is the death of Elizabeth Barnes, sister of Brian Barnes and daughter of Rich Barnes, Steve’s brother and attorney in our firm. We all in Cellino and Barnes are deeply saddened. My thoughts and prayers go with the entire Barnes family at this difficult time, “said Cellino.

NTSB does not travel to the scene

The crash left a large crater in a wooded area in the village of Corfu and, according to Sheriff Sheron, spread airplane parts over hundreds of meters.

“It’s pretty crumbled,” he said.

The single-engine aircraft, a SOCATA TBM-700, was en route from Manchester, New Hampshire, to Buffalo Airport, according to Sheron.
Ross Cellino’s attorney Terry Connors told CNN partner News Spectrum that the plane was registered with Steve Barnes and that Barnes was a registered pilot.

A TBM-700 can hold six or eight occupants, but apparently only two people were on board, according to Sheron.

The FAA was there to investigate, Sheron said.

The National Transportation Safety Board told CNN that it would not travel to the scene of the accident, also for safety reasons from Covid-19.
However, the agency is investigating the crash and is expecting a preliminary report in the next few weeks, according to Christopher T. O’Neil, NTSB’s chief media officer.

The cause of the tragic plane crash is not yet known.

CNN’s Alec Snyder also contributed to this report.
