The 3-year-old falls into hot water in Yellowstone National Park and suffers second degree burns

The child “ran off the path” before slipping and falling into a small thermal feature that the National Park Service says is a collection of extremely hot water, such as a hot spring, geyser, or mud pot.

The child was flown to the Burn Center at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with burns to his lower body and back.

Soil in hydrothermal areas is thin and fragile with boiling water just below the surface, the park’s press release said.

This is the second “major breach” in a thermal area this year, the park said. The first was in May when a person illegally entered the park and got into a thermal apparition while taking pictures in Old Faithful.
