Under armor

Under Armor developed the UA sports mask especially for athletes. However, any avid athlete will find the mask useful when upgrading from a standard fabric face mask. The mask is made up of three different layers that allow air to flow while protecting you. One layer of the mask has an antimicrobial treatment called “PROTX2”.

The first time I tried the Under Armor mask during a cardio workout, I noticed that it felt comfortable on my face – it didn’t stick to my mouth, which can be uncomfortable if you breathe heavily. When I started to sweat I noticed that instead of the hot mask I got a cool feeling which was so nice.

The mask didn’t completely wick away the moisture, but since the fabric wasn’t as tight on my mouth it wasn’t a problem. While the ear loops on the mask are not adjustable, they are stretchy and comfortable. Overall, I was impressed with this mask and would love to wear it indoors or outdoors.

The fountain

The Well Movement mask is made of 50% cotton so that it does not stay dry when you sweat heavily. For most activities, however, it is better than a 100% cotton mask as it is also made from sweat-friendly polyester and elastane. The ear loops are adjustable which is a big plus for fit and comfort. There is also a handy lanyard that you can use to wear the mask around your neck.

The best feature of the mask is the malleable nose pad, which you can use to make sure it fits comfortably and firmly on your face. After testing this mask, I decided that it was best for walking rather than intense exercise (I would go with the UnderArmour mask for this one) as the fabric is thin yet comfortable.


Carbon38 The mask set contains two masks and a laundry bag for washing. The masks are made from a mix of polyester and cotton so they dry quickly and help you stay cool. The ear loops are adjustable for a snug fit and the masks come in two sizes.

According to Carbon38, the masks are equipped with a multilayer filter system to protect you and the fabric has antibacterial properties. I liked how thick the fabric is on these masks – the nose piece is also textured to stay in place which is helpful for movement. The adjustable ear loops ensure a tighter and more personalized fit.

These masks are great for a brisk walk or other less intense workout as they fit close to your face. They can be difficult to wear during more intense exercise.


The everyday mask from Proper Cloth is made of linen, is antimicrobial and contains a filter for additional barrier protection. The mask fits comfortably with adjustable ear loops and the bridge of the nose is not too stiff but keeps it anchored to the face.

I like the linen material because it’s light and breathable, but I would wear it for leisurely activities like walking, pilates, or yoga. If you sweat a lot it gets damp because linen isn’t the most performance-friendly fabric.


Exercising in yoga clothing is much more comfortable than regular clothing. So why not take the same approach for your face mask? Yoga and sportswear brand Onzie uses upcycled yoga fabrics to create face masks that are stretchy and quick dry – just like your favorite leggings. Just a note: because the brand reuses fabrics from yoga clothing, it doesn’t allow you to pick specific colors and patterns, but it’s definitely worth it for a more sustainable mask option.

When I tried the mask it felt exactly as I expected. The mask sits snugly on your face, but the material is stretchy (like yoga pants) and breathable. Although the ear loops are not adjustable, they are still comfortable and the mask still fits nicely.

Since the mask is not particularly adjustable, I would wear it for less intense workouts where you can not breathe as hard. For more intense workouts, such as B. High impact cardio, make sure you have enough room to breathe around your mouth for the UnderArmour mask to work better.


Koral uses the same performance antimicrobial fabric as its active clothing, which is stretchy and quick drying, to create its face masks. When I put it to the test, I immediately found the soft, stretchy fabric comfortable on my face. The only thing I didn’t love about this mask was that the ear loops are not adjustable. After wearing this mask while jogging or walking, you can throw it in the laundry as the mask is machine washable.


The Athleta Made to Move mask was specially developed for training – which I noticed immediately when I tried the mask on. It’s one of the most comfortable and breathable masks I’ve tried so far.

The material is light and the inside of the mask has a mesh lining. The fabrics provide moisture and the mask fits nicely, but you can still breathe. There’s also an inside pocket in the mask if you’d like to add a layer of filtering (although that’s not included). The ear loops are made of a soft elastic band that won’t pull your hair and is adjustable.

The Athleta mask is great for hiking or even outdoor training such as jogging or cycling. Because the mask is breathable and adjustable, you can be sure that it will not fall off your face as you move.

What to look for in face masks for exercising


Fabric is one of the most important factors when training with a mask. Cloth masks are fine for everyday activities. But with exercise, cotton gets damp very quickly, which can make breathing difficult and encourage bacterial growth. For this reason, masks made from a breathable fabric similar to that used in active clothing (such as spandex or polyester) are the best choices. Even so, you want the mask to be breathable and comfortable while you move.


There’s nothing worse than having a face mask sag or fall off while you move around. First, it’s just annoying. Second, if you have to stop to fix it and you will likely have to touch your face – which to avoid to be sure, will disrupt your workout.

Look for a face mask that is adjustable or comes in a variety of sizes so you can find the best fit for you. Stretchy ear loops or elastic bands fit well and don’t slide around as much as the masks that are tied around your head.

Antimicrobial properties

Because sweat and moisture can be a breeding ground for bacteria, masks with a filter or an antimicrobial coating are ideal for physical activity. (Many of the masks on this list have these features.) While these may not actually kill or destroy a virus particle, there is no harm in having these additional barriers.

Also note that no mask on this list offers a 100% guarantee that it will protect you from the virus, no matter how many fancy features they have. However, wearing a mask is just another tool that can act as an extra barrier to stop the spread and protect you and others.
