Falling prices have pushed solid-state drives from a premium upgrade that would save you enough for the boot drive on your main computer that you can put a portable SSD in your laptop bag and get started. Here are our top tips.

As with most things, there are many, many different options to consider when recording an SSD or Solid State drive. The key factor for you may be the price, or maybe it's the sheer amount of storage. For others, speed could be crucial. If you drive on the field ̵

1; or literally in a field – you also need something more robust.

There's a good chance that everything will come together These things take into account when you buy, but no matter what you focus on, there will be an SSD for you. Here are our selection of the best all-round SSD, the fastest and most robust, so no one is left out.

Best Overall SSD: Samsung T5 (from $ 95)

  Samsung T5
Samsung [19659003] Samsung has established itself as one of the largest players in the market for portable SSDs for good reason. The Samsung T3 was a very popular SSD, and the Samsung T5 gets its replacement.

With the T5, Samsung has another hit thanks to its combination of super-fast speeds and reasonable prices. Thanks to the USB 3.1 port, you can expect real speeds of up to 540 MB / s thanks to the use of USB 3.1 connectivity via USB-C or USB-A ports (the drive has a USB-C port, however including cables for both USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A). In addition, it is quite compact.

Storage options range from 250GB to 2TB.

Fastest SSD: Samsung X5 (from $ 248)

  Samsung X5

If money is not an object, then the Samsung X5 should be yours. Using the lightning fast Samsung 970 Evo NVMe SSD in this device should tell you that it will go fast and we really do. But it's not cheap and slightly bigger than the T5.

How fast is the X5 ? In a word, very much. Connected via Thunderbolt 3, it offers speeds up to 2.8 GB / s, which is very fast. In the real world, you may not reach those speeds, but even if you find a solution somewhere, you will indeed be very happy.

Considering the cost, you might not want to come up with the 2TB model, but with 1TB and even 500GB options available for most budgets.

Best Hardwearing SSD: SanDisk Extreme (from $ 65)

  SanDisk Extreme

If you bring your portable SSD with you, you want it to stay safe while you do it. SSDs are inherently more robust than their HDD counterparts (due to lack of moving parts), but that does not make them indestructible. They still need them to withstand the harsh treatment, and the SanDisk Extreme will do just that.

With IP55 dust and water resistance, you do not have to worry about taking the Extreme on-site, whether by the pool or taking pictures. If your hard drive is crammed with important data, this certainty is worth gold.

Like most portable SSD models, everyone can be used here – from 250GB to a whopping 2TB.
